| Transport sector to be strengthened on modern lines- Hakeem | | | Jammu, Dec 7 Minister for Transport Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen today convened a high level officers meeting, to take stock of the various matters pertaining to transport sector. The Minister said that state government has already constituted a empowered Committee to look into the problems being faced by the industry adding that committee report is in final stage and is expected by 20th of this month, he said and added that the plea for reconsideration of the court directions made by the transporters for providing them succor in the matter with regard to removal of 25 years old vehicles from the roads has to be placed before the court. He said government is well seized that thousands of people are earning livelihood from this industry and most of them have also drawn loans from various financial institutions and could not repay it due to the turmoil being faced by the state over the years. Hakeem Yaseen said that government is determined to strengthen the transport industry in the state, and implement the court directions in letter and spirit to curb air and noise pollution and other traffic problems. He said government is considering to set up more mini bus stands and bus basis in the capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar aimed at to provide better transport facilities to the people and to minimize the traffic jams and pollution to large extent. The Minister was of the view that the rates charged by the Sumo drivers operating on different routes across the state need to be rationalized. He said that a uniform rate would be introduced to provide succor to the people. Among others Transport Commissioner Mr. R.Tikoo, Chairman Pollution Control Board Mr. K. K.Tiwari, IG Traffic Mr. A.R.Khan, Special Secretary Transport Mr. Haq Nawaz, MD SRTC Mr. Sanjeev Verma, Director State Motor Garages besides senior officers of the line departments attended the meeting. The Minister who enquired about the latest situation of the Jammu Srinagar National Highway, was informed by the Inspector General Traffic that presently no passenger vehicle is stranded across the highway due to its blockade and efforts are on for the opening of the highway. |
