BJP, JKNPP remain mum to strike a chord? | Custodial death of NC worker | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 1: Separatists in Kashmir valley took lead in condemning alleged custodial killing of a senior National Conference (NC) worker while mainstream political parties especially Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) are yet to make up their mind. Firebrand Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani expressed serious concern over custodial killing of a National Conference (NC) worker. Mainstream parties like Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and JKNPP not only failed to condemn the gruesome act but are yet to issue an official handout to clear their stand over the alleged killing. The silence of BJP in particular has evoked severe criticism. It has been connected to their `clandestine' association with NC and especially Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. "The BJP has many interests to safeguard and annoying the NC cannot be risked", said a critic. "The BJP has remained silent to strike a chord somewhere", he added. Pertinent to mention, the BJP MLAs resorted to cross voting to elect NC candidates in the Legislative Council elections held early this year. This `misadventure' may have cost seven MLAs of the BJP their candidature. The BJP, it is believed, also toed the NC line to defeat tabling of the Afzal Guru clemency resolution last week. The PP has also failed to voice its concern and so has the Jan Morcha. "If a NC worker can be killed in custody, the plight of the commoner can only be imagined in this neglected land", said a rights activist. "All parties irrespective of the ideology they follow must rise above political considerations to ensure an end to such incidents in future", he said. |
