Did Rahul pave way for Omar's exit? | Rotational Chief Ministership | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 2 : A few months ago Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh assured Omar Abdullah a full term in office. But last week Omar's `friend' and Congress General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi visited Kashmir to revive his old ties with the one time paradise one Earth. Rahul perhaps could not revive the ties but he gave Omar the shock of his life by raising the issue of rotational Chief Ministership yet again. "The issue shall be decided by the Congress high command", he said without any ambiguity. Omar, according to informed sources in the Congress may not be changed but he is under Congress scanner. "The moment Congress high command is convinced that the National Conference leadership is taking Congress for granted, Omar will be shown the exit", they said. The local Congress leaders have been accusing Omar of sidelining them. If the trend continues, Omar will be in trouble, reports from New Delhi suggest. The National Conference and Congress have no written agreement on the term of Chief Minister. There is a verbal commitment but such commitments hardly matter in politics especially when it comes to Jammu Kashmir. Only three months ago, Prime Minister assured a full term to Omar but Rahul has raised the issue again. Rahul, observers believe, is the General Secretary of the world's largest democratic political party. It is second to Communist Party of China only. The General Secretary of such an organization cannot be careless in issuing statements of grave importance. So this is where the trouble lies for Omar. Some concerned quarters have also hinted at Omar opting out of the coalition. However, according to analysts, this will be suicidal for Omar and his National Conference. In such an eventuality, Congress can easily form the government with PDP support. And, if that actually happens, NC will lose many a seat in Kashmir Valley. |
