Fair sex favours opening of more border routes
10/3/2011 12:49:40 AM
The second intra-Kashmir women's conference that ended in the scenic resort of Gulmarg in the west of the valley the other day expectedly supported the demand for opening of more traditional border routes for facilitating hassle-free and easy people to people contact. The Conference had been organised by the Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation (CDR) with the aim of involving women belonging to Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan administered Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan belt in the process of dialogue that could lead to gradual reduction in the trust deficit and ultimate solution to the Kashmir issue. Yes, as is the case with men women too believed, that too strongly, in the power and miracle of dialogue to defuse highly volatile sit uation. Some of the women participants were said to have given vent to their anguish and grief over the way people estranged and separated by political history are not able to interact and meet freely and frequently . For Dr Aneesa, a radiologist who had travelled all the way from Pakistan occupied Kashmir, was nost nostalgic about her brief stay in Kashmir because some of her blood relations continue to live in Chattabal and Zadibal areas of Srinagar. Amina Bibi, a legislator from Gilgit-Baltistan, had a valid argument in favour of opening of more border routes in Jammu and Kashmir. She stated at the conference that it took her four days to reach Srinagar and had the traditional border routes been thrown open for travel it would have taken a few hours for her to be in Srinagar. Tanveera Lateef pleaded in favour of making the border, that separates Jammu Kashmir from Pakistan administered Kashmir, irrelevant. She and others wanted all the traditional border routes, that had remained open till 1947, to be reopened so that there were no problems and hurdles faced in the people to people contact programme. According to the executive Director of the CDR, Sushoba Barve the aim of the centre was to bring women from various walks of life and having different shades of opinion and belonging to Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan administered Kashmir and Gilgit-Balt istan belt on one platform so that the fair sex could make a solid and useful contribution to the Indo-Pak efforts for burying the 60-year long conflict and tension under the umbrella of cordial ties and mutual cooperation. The goal is sublime. The purpose is genuine. The aim is noble. But the success of such efforts depends on the approach and strategy of the establishment in Islamabad, the Army and the ISI in Pakistan. In fact the establishment in Islamabad, the Army and the ISI have become three pillars on which the future of Pakistan banks. More than the establishment in Islamabad it is the Army and the ISI that have the powers to either bless efforts for reducing trust deficit and conflict between India and Pakistan or sabotage these peace moves. Hence it depends on the power of women, if they wield any,to influence the mind set of the Army and the ISI in Pakistan in the interest of peace in South Asia.
