Joginder clinches Rustam-e-Indo-Pak-England dangal Spectators’ glued to see British, Pak grapplers | Navratra Festival-2011 | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA EARLY TIMES REPORT KATRA , Oct 2: Grappling in mud just below the foothills of the holy abode of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, the wrestlers from India, Pakistan and England spread the message of peace and friendship thereby winning the hearts of thousands of spectators at Vivekananda Sports Stadium here today. The wrestlers from three countries sweat it out for supremacy over each other amidst humid weather conditions and a sea of humanity (approximately about 30-40 thousand people) who converged at Vivekananda Sports Stadium to witness the thrilling bouts, which undoubtedly captivated them for nearly four hours. Though not a full fledged international, event, however, the excitement attached to 7th Rustam-e-Indo-Pak (added England from this year) wrestling competition at Katra had resemblance almost similar to the traditional rivalry and enthusiasm in world sports arena between the opposing teams or countries. The “Mission Dosti” dangal (Indian Style Wrestling), which is a regular feature of Navratra Festival at Katra for the last seven years, this time too proved to be a big hit among the masses as people from different parts of district Reasi thronged the venue. The electrifying atmosphere at the stadium worked as a stimulator to bolster the confidence of grapplers of each of the participating country and it was well evident as they fought with great vigour and strength to outdo each other. Amidst drumbeats and whistle blowing of thousands of spectators, all the ten contests had stiff opposition among all the contestants except for some bouts wherein winning wrestlers defeated their rivals within a minute. In the first bout of the day, Indian wrestler Vijay defeated his Pakistani counterpart Pappu Pahalwan while in the next bout English grappler of Indian origin Jitender overpowered Indian wrestler Nilesh. The third bout saw an Indian grappler Benia emerging victorious over his opponent Israr Khan from Pakistan. David from England won the hearts of the spectators with his power packed performance as he clinched his bout by defeating his Indian rival Dinesh within few seconds of the start of fight. Similarly, Mohsin Riyaz, Ahmad Bhat and Yusuf from Pakistan while Saba and Jodha of India won their respective bouts. The real thrill and excitement was still to unfold in the form of the last bout considered to be the ‘mother of all battles’. The people were becoming restless with each passing minute to see the main dangal between Rustam-e-Hind Joginder of India and Rustam-e-Pakistan Zaman Anwar of Pakistan. Amid roar of the crowd, Joginder overpowered his opponent from Pakistan with in one minute much to the delight of audience Joginder was awarded Silver Gadda (mace), Patta and cash prize of Rs 60000 and the runner up Anwar got cash prize of Rs 40,000. Earlier, the ‘special’ guests from Pakistan were taken to the venue in well decorated open jeeps after passing through the main bazaars of Katra town.
