Ram Leela: Saga of communal harmony and brotherhood in Kishtwar, | Asif Iqbal Naik | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Kishtwar October 3:- “Unity is strength.” This is merely a slogan for some people, but in Kishtwar District this slogan has proved its strength from time to time as far as unity among two communities viz Hindu and Muslims is concerned and same can be witnessed from ongoing Ram Leela show at Kishtwar organized by the “Adarsh Dramatic Club” in Kishtwar District, where the members from both communities from last so many decades not only turned to witnesses the famous scenes from one of the world greatest epic I.e. Ramayana a holly book followed by corers of people worldwide belonging to Hindu community, but the members from Muslim community too come forward and played some important roles in stage shows of Ram Leela at Kishtwar, beside composing background music as well. Like from past so many years, Adarsh Dramatic Club this year also organized Ram Leela Show at Ram Leela ground Kishtwar in which the most attractive person who attracts lot of audience attention is 19 year old Umair Kamal who not only acted in few scenes in Ram Leela, but also entertain the crowds during the interval period. While talking to the Early Times, Umair Kamal said that he feel happy to be the part of annual Ram Leela show at Kishtwar. He said that he loves acting and would like to perform in any role which will be offered to him by the club. He said that it is the matter of pride for him to perform on stage in front of the large number of people. He said that he joins “Adarsh Dramatic Club” to promote communal harmony and brotherhood. Other then acting, Umair is very talented in mimicry and also entertains the crowd during interval period with his mimicry as well as with his gossips. He is also known for copying the voices of so many top bollywood actors like Shahrukh Khan, Nana Patikar, Shakti Kapoor, Amresh Puri, ect and also that of world famous Cartoon character Mickey mouse . Kishtwar which is known for its communal harmony and brotherhood since ancient time has not only transferred its identity /brotherhood to its next generations, but also transferred the art and culture, earlier it was Jai Hind Smiti club before 1970, now it was Adarsh Dramatic Club from 1970 onwards promotes the communal harmony and brotherhood by carrying forward the precious art in the perform of theater and stage shows with Muslim brothers on board. It was Rehmat Ali Nagar and Mohammad Iqbal Sarkooti who composed music for Adarsh Dramatic Club in 70,s and 80,s was today replaced by Sanjeev Sharma and Ashok Kumar. Among the muslim if it was late Manzoor Ilahi Tak and Late Ghulam Rasool Hap used to perform in Ram Leela in 70/80’s now it was Umair Kamal today. Similarly the art of performance on Ram Leela stage also transferred to new generation where youth like Rajinsh Bhandari (Ram), Pawan Kotwal (Bharat), Happy Shan (Lakshman), Sanjay Shan (Hunuman), Jagdish Raj (Sitta), Rockey (Ravan) and Chander Mohan Gupta (Kum Karan) took over the reign from people like Madan Lal Bhandari , Rajinder Kumar wazir, Om Ji Ghoswami, Ashok Ji Bhandari, Ashwani Ji Shan and Ajeet Sharma. It was in the year 1992 when like in different parts of the state, the fire of militancy also engulfed the Kishtwar as well, as a result of which the prevailing situation forced Adarsh Dramatic Club to close its function till somehow the normalcy starts limping back in Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2003, when the Adarsh Dramatic Club once again restarted its activities and since then they continuously were organizing Ram Leela every year. Remembering the days of militancy, 55 year old Madan Bhandari said that all those year’s remains so painful that one can’t forget what happens during all those years. He said that it was painful to remain away from art and culture which we have inherited from our elders. “What happens during all those years is now a history, but what I want to say that art never dies, which one can judge by watching the performance of our youths, who were performing every year in Ram Leela shows.” Said Mr. Madan Bhandari who is also an acting President of Adarsh Dramatic Club. He said that club has overcome with so many problems with the active help from different quarters of the society. He said that MLA Kishtwar Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo has also provided some funds out of his CDF for construction of stage and have also promised for more help. He said that MLC Syed Asgar Ali have also committed for providing Rs. 50000/ out of his CDF. Om Ji Ghoswami Director of the Club said that he feel happy in helping out the youths to building up as an artist. He said that, youths of Kishtwar have lot of talent and can emerge in the field of art and culture as and when they find any chance at higher level. Mr. Rajinder Wazir Pattern of the club said that the aim and object of the club is to promote ancient old communal harmony and brotherhood among the people of the Kishtwar. He said peace is imperative for every developmental society, for which we have to maintain the communal harmony and brotherhood among the various communities within the society. Beside art and culture, Mr. Gupta said that Adarsh Dramatic Club is committed to promote communal harmony. He said that financial problem is the major cause of concern in the progress of the club as far as expansion of its art activities is concerned. He said that due to lack of funds, the club restricts its activities to few shows every year. He said that he and other members of the organization want to expand the activities of the club by organizing more programs on the pattern of Ram Leela, so that people get aware about its art and culture. He said that he feel happy after seeing that among the audience who turned out to watch Ram Leela show belongs to Muslim community, which according to Mr. Wazir itself speaks in volume that communal harmony is the biggest strength of the people in Kishtwar.
