ASHA workers hold protest, demand govt employee status | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Oct 4:Jammu and Kashmir ASHA workers union held protest demonstration under the banner of CITU at Sher-e- Kashmir Park, here today. Hundreds of ASHA workers from all parts of the valley participated in the demonstration. These workers raised a number of demands which include government employee status, enhancement and timely monthly salary, six hours of duty, supply of special kits, adequate protection in the field, issuance of identity cards and other incentives. While addressing the demonstration, State President CITU and MLA Kulgam, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said that the services rendered by Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) should be acknowledged by way of paying genuine honorarium to them. He said that the ASHAs have proved instrumental in providing better medicare to the ruralites especially the women folk and their young ones, besides ensuring social mobilization. He strongly seconded the demand of ASHAs regarding enhancing monthly wages to them. Tarigami urged the government to take a serious note of the discontent among the ASHA workers and take the necessary action for the immediate fulfilment of their demands. K. Hemlata, General Secretary of All India Federation of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers (AIFAWH) in her address said that ASHA workers have been performing yeoman’s service in creating health related awareness among the people of the state particularly those living in rural and far flung areas. “Despite the hard efforts put in by these workers for generating awareness about health care and hygiene among rural masses, the lack of medicines and health services in dispensaries and hospitals are undoing all the hard-work done by these activists”, she maintained and said that mere remunerations being paid to them do not suffice their day to day needs.
