Nation cannot afford 'casual' approach of senior ministers
!!Balbir Ram!!10/4/2011 10:33:14 PM
Just a few days back, it was on September 30 that our highly educated and so-called intelligent Union Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram, popular as PC or P. Chidambaram, while replying a question at his monthly press conference in New Delhi said “Frankly, I have a very short memory.” He made such a confession while he was asked whether “Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram offered to resign in the past 10 days amidst a raging controversy over the 2G note of Finance Ministry.
“How many times did you offer to resign, was it thrice....?” another journalist asked him. “Along with short memory, I am also poor in counting,” Mr. Chidambaram replied. “Actually, I am learning numeracy,” he added.
Needless to mention that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) discharges multifarious functions, important among them being the maintenance of Internal Security besides law and order. The Union Home Minister might have uttered these expressions just to evade the direct answer to these leading questions or as a matter of sarcastic remark. But what can one decipher and conclude by such confessions by none other than a minister occupying most important portfolio in the Union Council of Ministers.
Not long ago, a news report from United Nations received attention of every Indian which said that in a shocking development, External Affairs Minister of India SM Krishna made a big blunder, when he read out the Portuguese Foreign Minister's speech at the UN. Krishna continued reading the speech for about three minutes before being corrected by India 's envoy to the UN Hardeep Singh Puri.
The External Affairs Minister or the Indian Foreign Minister is a position of office at cabinet level within the Government of India. The chief responsibility of the External Affairs Minister is to represent India and its government in the international community. The minister heads the "Ministry of External Affairs." This is just another incident that reminds one of the 'faux pass' kind of situation caused by our well read and supposedly intelligent ministers.
It is not only P. Chidambarm or SM Krishna whose acts brought shame not only on the Union government but prompts one to ponder that if people like them truly deserve such important responsibilities.
In another similar incident, our former Union Home Minister in same UPA Shivraj Patil had to face anger from all sides when he was seen in three different sets of clothes on the night of September 13 when serial blasts in New Delhi killed 22 innocent people. He was accused of paying more attention to his clothes than the blasts.
The Union Home Minister, or more properly the Minister for Home Affairs, is a position in the Indian Cabinet, at both State and Union levels. It needs no mention that the Home Ministry is one of the most important, powerful and high profile ministry after the Prime Minister. The minister is in charge of the Internal administration of the country, with responsibility for all matters relating to Centre-State and Inter-State relations; all matters related to internal security; maintenance of law and order within the country; matters like Citizenship and Naturalization Census of Population, notification of appointment, resignation and removal of Governors of States and Lieut. Governors and Administrators in Union Territories.
On account of these high profile assignments and responsibilities entrusted on the Home Ministry, the person in the chair is expected to be doubly sharp and vigilant on all accounts as to what he should say and under what circumstances his statements should come. It is the Home minister whose every word is being heard and followed by the entire country as final quoting the version of the government or simply what government thinks or looks at any issue related to Home affairs. Therefore there is no scope for Home Minister in particular and other senior ministers in general to be casual or less responsible in so far as their conduct and work is concerned. Our nation is already faced with a lot of criticism and multifaceted problems. Therefore, we cannot afford to have such blunders or errors committed by the learned ministers, consciously or unconsciously.
