Abhinav theater crumbling down, artists raise banner of revolt
J&K govt in deep slumber! Mishu Gupta
10/4/2011 10:59:51 PM
JAMMU, Oct 4: Treated as cultural hub of Jammu region, Abhinav Theatre Complex of Jammu Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and languages (JKAACL) has been totally abandoned by the state government for the reasons best known to it.
The theater complex has lost the shine and is no more considered venue of state’s cultural diversity. What has added to the miseries of this theater is the fact that government is disinterested in both renovation and repair of this theater. Not only government, even those manning this theater prefer minting money over taking pains for the upkeep of this prestigious cultural seat of Jammu region.
Cultural minister has reportedly been kept in dark over the state of affairs in the theater complex. Numerous reminders by local artists, writers and event managers to urgently renovate the complex have fallen on deaf ears. The situation is likely to worsen in the days ahead. A sleeping government would seemingly wake up only when artists and writers would leave their routine work and resort to protests.
A group of artists has already decided to hold a Dharna in the premises of Abhinav Theater to put pressure on the state government to release funds for carrying out renovation work. They said that ongoing Dharna in the premises of the complex has also failed to cut ice with the Babus of the Academy of Art Culture and Languages.
Artists targeted the authorities of the Academy of art culture and languages for failing to make take up the issue with the state government and get the renovation work started. They are appalled over the fact that theatre has been used as a platform more by the political class than the artists from time to time to hold their meetings, conferences, felicitation ceremonies and other culturally useless functions.
Abhinav theatre is facing hardships due to non-functional air-conditioning system, poor lighting and virtually damaged audio system. Artists told Early Times that the system is out of order for a long time now yet nothing concrete has been done to repair the basic facilities. They added that air conditioning plant was installed in the auditorium in 1998 during the last phase of renovation and since then no major renovation work was carried out by the authorities who boast of looking after the interests of the artists and scholars.
Due to poor noise, lighting and air conditioning system, large number of organisers have been shying away from organizing the events. Besides, dozens of sculptures of the noted sculptors have been installed in the premises of the Abhinav Theatre Complex. Prominent sculptors include Gayoor Hassan, Govind Kour, Niaz Ahmed Mir, Amrik Singh, A Chakravorty, Anand Panda, S Kanippan, Suraj Khajuria, K N Anand, Rashin David, Inder Manhas, Shuja Naila, S R Bhushan, R N Singh, and Avtar Singh.
Incessant rains have also damaged the theater as rain water comes down from the roof. However, Secretary, Jammu Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages Zafar Iqbal Manhas could not be contacted even after repeated attempts.
