Leave 'fixer' political worker, Omar's administration spares none | Think about this! | | Syed Junaid Hashmi Jammu, Oct 4: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's recent threat to file defamation suit against leader of People's Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti amply not only describes the image consciousness of a man embroiled by avoidable controversies but raises question on his political maturity and wisdom. His mantra is "Either you are with me or against". Omar does not like to be dictated and seemingly hates criticism. His politics has mostly revolved around taking the opponents to task. Leave aside the high profile National Conference (NC) worker Mohammed Yousuf Shah, Omar has in the recent past spared none. To begin with, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's administration whether knowingly or unknowingly targeted media, the fourth pillar of democracy. What irked him was a news item published in one of the local dailies of Jammu regarding attack of a Hindu temple in Anantnag. From Editor to news reporters, all were harassed and humiliated for no fault of theirs. Deputy Commissioner illegally sealed newspaper office of a Jammu based local daily and thereafter, served them notices. Braving all odds, the newspaper managed to restart its publication within hours of its office being sealed. It did not budge from publishing truth. One anticipated that Omar's administration would respect the idealism of the said newspaper and desist from further harassment and intimidation. But that never happened. Unable to bring the newspaper under its control, the administration especially those sitting in air-conditioned rooms of civil secretariat began using resources at their command. They began targeting other business establishments of the owners of the said newspaper. All efforts were made to disgrace the owners. But, nothing could deter them from writing and publishing the facts. Even Omar Abdullah did not desist from tweeting against the contents of the said newspaper. Regarding a news story, Omar said that he doubts authenticity of the news reports published in that particular newspaper. Ironically, no one told Omar Abdullah that the report over which he commented had been penned down by one of the most credible journalist from Kashmir valley. Though Omar doubted credentials of this report but the fact remains that High Court took cognizance of the same report about which Omar was talking. Leave aside the belief of Omar in that particular newspaper, he should ask a question ton his own conscience, about how much he relies on news reports published in newspapers. Much has been written about the corrupt and the corruption in Omar administration by almost all the leading newspapers, it would be interesting to note if the 'defamation man' of Kashmir valley comes up with details of action taken by him over even one Single report. Before threatening left and right, Omar should take a look at the officers manning key posts in his administration and then talk about conscience. Regarded as honest and sincere, Omar should ask himself about the justification of the manner in which a particular business family of Jammu is still being hassled and disgraced. One would like to remind Omar that he is on this chair either for few months or if New Delhi reposes trust in him for few years, he has to return to the voters and seek fresh mandate. There is a famous saying "Hitler was never democratically elected. Instead, he rose to power by deceit and then brutalized Jews for political reasons." The sooner the "defamation man" realizes this, better it would be. Omar being young has the advantage of correcting the wrong. He should see opportunities in controversies surrounding him and instead of resorting threats and arm twisting tactics; he should take a lesson on "Human Resource Management" from his father Farooq Abdullah. Omar should learn that bullying people especially the fourth estate does not help. As Chief Minister, if New Delhi permits, Omar still has time at his disposal and has can make a new beginning from wherever he wants. But the chances of the same are bleak. And it may not come as surprise, if after reading this report; Omar might get offended and order his dukedom to bulldoze this fourth pillar of democracy with some other repressive measures. |
