| BJP breaks silence, demands probe into Jammu custodial killings | | NC worker's incident brings to fore "cash for MLC seat" practice | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 4: Breaking its silence after five days, the state unit of BJP today said that the issue of mysterious death of National Conference activist Syed Mohammad Yusuf Shah is no longer an internal matter of that party. In what can be seen as the first reaction to the issue which has triggered political storm in the state with ruling NC in the centrestage of contoversy, BJP said the matter had facets beyond custodial death particularly in the wake of allegations of torture death. What mae BJP reaction even more cosnpicuous today is that the party has related it to one more controversy ,contending that the issue also involves serious angle of "cash for MLC seat."
While the MLAs of both the factions remained silent during two days that saw complete disrution of proceedings and ruckus by PDP in the Legislative Assembly, BJP State Chief Spokesperson and National Executive Member Dr. Jitendra Singh has stated Dr. Jitendra Singh today stated the party leadership had taken a definite position on the issue of "cash for vote" and reiterated that in such cases the whistle blowers deserve state protection not custody.
Dr Singh contended that same yardstick needed to be applied to the revelations and disclosures by two other NC activisits who had given huge amounts of money to deceased and who in turn had promised them berth in the Upper House., Dr. Jitendra Singh said startling disclosures that amount as much as nearly one crore was exchanging hands to purchase an MLC seat should have been thoroughly probed to arrive at full facts but instead the provider of the crucial information got silenced to death under suspicious circumstances.
While demanding a CBI inquiry into the whole episode to ensure free fair conclusive results, Dr. Jitendra Singh said that there is a widespread public impression in the last few years that the ruling coalition has turned the state Legislative Council a rehabilitation institution for defeated politicians, rich businessmen and blue eyed boys of the influential politicians and political families. He said the state of Jammu & Kashmir has pionered this "cash for MLC seat" phenomenon and earned the dubious distinction of demolishing the sanctity of Upper House which was envisaged as the House of Elders to accomodate men of merit who could make an intellectual contribution to the functioning of legislature.
The BJP leader hit out at the ruling coalition and alleged discrimination in the follow-up to various cases of custodial killings. " Assembly over the last four days witnessed heated exchanges over alleged custodial killing of Syed Mohd. Yusuf Shah ………but several similar custodial killings were awaiting follow-up action in Jammu region", he said while citing the example of custodial death of Rajneesh Sharma. He also called for taking up Justice OP Sharma Commission report indicting top police officers for disrespect shown to Amarnath land agitation martyr Late Kuldeep Verma. |
