Will celebrate Dussehra in Kashmir: Sangharsh Samiti
10/5/2011 10:24:48 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR: Dussehra, symbolizing victory of good over evil, will be celebrated in the strife torn state of Kashmir valley tomorrow. Kashmiri Pandit Sangharsh Samiti, an organisation representing Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley, said almost all the arrangements have been put place for the celebrations.

The Pandit body plans to burn the effigy of demon king Ravana in TRC ground here at around 1730 hours on Thursday,” its president Sanjay Tickoo said.

“This festival is not associated with a particular religion as such we call it Dussehra,” he said.

It was after two decades in 2007 that Dussehra was celebrated in Kashmir valley but the mass uprising eventually triggered by the government order to transfer 800 kanals of forestland to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board 'forced' the organizers to rescind its programme in next year (2008). While the Pandit body organized it again in 2009, it could organize the event in 2010 due the unrest which led to killing of over 100 persons allegedly in police and paramilitary CRPF action.

Prior to the mass exodus of the Kashmir Pandits in early nineties, Dussehra was celebrated annually and then all the three effigies of Ravana, Kumkaran and Megnath were burnt.

According to the government figures more than 250,000 Pandits fled Kashmir after the outbreak of militancy in 1989, one of the biggest migrations of any community from the state.
