‘Crime committed to appease girl friend, taking revenge from tanker owners’
Blind murder of oil tanker driver solved within week, accused arrested: Niaz

Border Police Jammu today claimed to have achieved a major success in solving the much publicized gruesome blind murder case of a tanker driver Inder Paul with the arrest of the murderer and recovered the weapon of offence and also seized the bank account of Shuker Singh in which the accused Shankaar Singh had deposited Rs.1.55 lakh. Giving this information to the media men here today, the Deputy Inspector General of Police Jammu Niaz Mehmood said that the Police is credited to have solved this blind murder case in a record time of just one week adding that the murder was planned and committed in a very treacherous manner. The DIG said that the case assumed much importance when the wailing relatives and neighbours of the deceased along with the other people of Janipur locally interrupted a public function of Chief Minister, who promptly instructed for prompt and fair investigation of the case by a competent authority. He said a special team headed by SDPO Samba DSP Abrar Choudhary was constituted to work under the close supervision of SSP Border Rajinder Gupta .The other members of the team included SHO Samba Inspector Varinder Singh, SHO Ramgarh Inspector Raj Tripathi and SI Sanjeeve Chib, he added. The Investigation conducted by the special team revealed that Inder Paul was working as a driver with Manhas Road lines of Preet Nagar Jammu and was driving the Indian Oil Tanker of Ajay Singh Chib. After loading diesel from the Depot on November 18 last, he left for Kargil and on reaching near Amphala, one Shankaar Singh asked him to take him along as he had an important assignment in Banihal. Since Shankaar Singh who was already well known to the deceased, gave him the lift and on reaching Banihal, the accused suggested Inder Paul stay for the night at Banihal and accordingly parked his tanker near Mala Laxmi Auto Oil Store and stayed there for the night. The accused managed to get three crude liquor pouches and mixed it with half bottle of bag piper whisky to prepare a cocktail and offered it to Inder Paul and after leaving him in unconscious condition, he broke upon the locks of tanker and sold the diesel to the petrol pump dealer for Rs. two lakhs. After unloading the tanker, the accused Shankaar Singh started driving the tanker back towards Jammu with an intention to eliminate Inder Paul at a lonely place.
The DIG said that after reaching Udhampur, the accused chose Dhar Road towards Samba and at midnight he brought the tanker in Kehli ground and asked the deceased to accompany him for dinner at a dhaba and on reaching Kotli Mandi nallah he struck hard on the head of Inder Paul with panna of tanker and continued the attack till him victim breathed the lost. Niaz further revealed that the culprit left the spot along with the money on the next day and deposited it in his father’s account. He said after sustained investigation, the Police laid its hands on the culprit who during interrogation confessed the guilt and said that to appease one of his girl friend Usha Devi (name changed )of Purkoo, he committed the crime adding that the said girl had demanded Rs.30,000 from him for her domestic use. In order to appease the girl, Shankaar illegally sold off the oil tanker and killed the tanker driver to destroy the evidence of oil tanker theft . The other objective behind the murder, the accused is reported to have said, was to take revenge from the owners of Manhas Road lines as he was not getting financial assistance from them for last many years, the DIG said adding that further investigation in the case is in progress.
