| Musharaff statement evokes mixed reaction | | | Jammu | Dec 7 The recent statement of Gen. Musharraf that Pakistan is ready to give up its claim on Kashmir; if both the countries agree on the four- point solution, which include demilitarization and self-governance with joint supervision. To know the reaction of various political leaders to Musharaf’s new proposal, “Early Times” reporter interviewed various leaders of state level organizations and national parties and majority of them have expressed their mixed reaction, while some described it a positive step for restoration of the Kashmiri imbroglio, the others described it detrimental to the interests of the state and the country as a whole. While welcoming the proposal the NC President Omar Abdullah said “we should discuss the matter with open heart, and do not loose the opportunity which is knocking on out doors for the first time. He said time is ripe to solve Kashmir tangle once for all as people are fed up with the present uncertainty and want restoration of peace. Former State BJP President Prof Nirmal Singh said that this proposal has been mooted at such a time when the Pakistan has been loosing its credibility in outside nations on Kashmir. To overcome international pressure, he said, the Pak President has been raking up such issues to divert the attention of his people who are fed up with the military rule in that country where democracy has little meaning. MY Tarigami, General Secretary CPI (M) said, ‘it is golden opportunity and we should not miss it’ adding that it is for the first time that any Pakistani leader has shown flexibility is solving the Kashmir issue. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti favoured dialogue process between the two countries to end the present crisis and favoured tree movement of people from both side of the LoC besides trade. Saying there has been a positive change in the thinking of Pakistani rulers, Ravinder Sharma Congress spokesman said, that every step has to be taken cautiously and carefully keeping in view the past experiences. Chairman J&K Salvation Movement Zaffar Akbar Bhat said, Mushraff’s proposal should he taken seriously and we should not loose the golden opportunity if the Indian’s leaders are sincere in resolving the Kashmir dispute, which has been the bone of contention over 59 years.Out rightly rejecting Musharaff’s 4-point proposal, Hardliner, Syed Ali Shah Geelani of Tehrik-e- Hurriyat demanded implementation of UN resolutions adding that nothing short of (Plebiscite) would be acceptable to the people of Jammu and Kashmir for which they have been struggling over last six decades. He said there is nothing new in the proposal that would lead to resolution of Kashmir tangle. ‘If India and Pakistan are sincere to resolve the issue, the only course left is to hold plebiscite in accordance with the UN Resolutions’, he maintained. Anan Sharma, Shiv Sena (Bal Thackeray) State President has cautioned the Indian leadership not to fall in Musharaff’s trap who is not a trust worthy which can be easily understood as to how he managed the Kargil conflict when the talks between the two countries were in progress. His proposal is acceptable only if he first vacates the area presently under Pakistan’s illegal occupation and then only the proposal could be debated and discussed.
