For Afghan President India is a great friend and Pakistan a twin brother | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 5: Fearing adverse reaction from Islamabad over the latest agreement Afghanistan President reached with New Delhi Hamid Karzai, who had detailed discussion with Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in the union capital the other day, has conveyed to Pakistan that the deal was not going to affect Kabul's ties with Islamabad. Yes, the latest Indo-Afghan agreement may cause fresh strains in the already fragile relations between New Delhi and Islamabad because the former has not favoured growing influence of Indian agencies in Afghanistan. At the sametime Afghanistan cannot afford to annoy Islamabad because of geographical proximity and the influence of the Pak Army and the ISI on the Talibans who have been instrumental in destabilising peace in the region. It is in this context that Hamid Karzai has assured Pakistan that the latest agreement was not going to prove against the interests of Islamabad. Reports reaching here said that the Afghan President Hamid Karzai sought to reassure Pakistan about his country's new partnership deal with India, which will see New Delhi help train Afghan security forces. "Pakistan is a twin brother, India is a great friend. The agreement that we signed yesterday with our friend will not affect our brother," Karzai has stated. The strategic partnership deal sealed with India on Tuesday - Afghanistan's first such pact with another country - deepens already friendly ties and aims to boost trade, security and cultural links between the two. Indian involvement in Afghanistan is sensitive because of the delicate and often deadly power games in South Asia, with Pakistan vehemently opposed to its arch-foe meddling in what it considers its backyard. New Delhi, fearful of the return of a religious militant regime in Kabul, has ploughed more than $2 billion in aid into the country to gain influence, helping fund highways and the new national parliament building. Reports indicated that close ties between Afghanistan and India could be a first step towards creating tension free atmosphere in the neighbourhood. Unstable Afghanistan can be of as much risk as unstable Pakistan to India. |
