Syed fell to `betrayal' of Abdullahs? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 5: Braving militant threats and grenade attacks in early 1990 when militancy was at its peak, Syed Yusuf did not desert National Conference like most of his party men. He reposed trust in the party that he loved but fell to a dispensation headed by the closest man in his life. Syed was a frequent visitor to Sheikh Family. The guards posted at the gates of the Sheikh mansion at posh Gupkar knew him well. He was perhaps the only person who was spared frisking by the guards. According to his brother, Farooq Abdullah frequently invited him and ensured his favourite food at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Syed helped his relatives, friends, neighbors, of course in lieu of a handsome consideration. He was a trouble shooter for `aggrieved' bureaucrats and `fixed' deals for them. He got a number of youth appointed in various government and semi-government departments, acknowledged his relatives. Syed had a `big' heart. Big heart, doctors say is a problem. It did not stop beating when Crime Branch sleuths hurled `choicest' abuses at him. He was shocked the moment he was handed over to Crime Branch by his `own' people. The `betrayal' was too serious to be ignored. He took it to his heart and succumbed. But his death caused a stir in the state. The shocks were felt in the Legislative Assembly. During his life, Syed worked for a particular party and in the process won many an enemy. But his death has evoked a response from one and all-the separatists and the mainstream politicians. |
