Dussehra festivities across Jammu | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 6 Three towering effigies of demon King Ravan, his brother Kumbhakaran and son Meghnad went up in flames and cracked in fiery splendour as the festival Dussehra, symbolising the triumph of good over evil, was celebrated across the region with traditional fervour and great fanfare today. The main celebrations of the event in the winter capital city was held at historic Parade Ground and the second one at Dussehra Ground Gandhi Nagar. As the sky darkened, the effigies stuffed with fire-crackers went up in flames amid deafening sounds. The fire crackers lit up the skies and crowds burst into cheers as the effigies went up in flames on 'Vijayadashmi', marking the slaying of demon king Ravan of the erstwhile kingdom of Lanka by Lord Rama. Dussehra, which also marks the end of scorching summer and heralding of winter, is preceded by nine auspicious days of Navaratra during which devotees pray, fast and feast. Ramlilas, the vivid enactments from the life of Lord Rama, were staged in various parts of the region during the nine days preceding the festival. At Parade Ground, Minister for Medical Education RS Chib , Minister Health Sham Lal Sharma , BJP MLA Ashok Khajuria Prof. Chaman lal Gupta , and Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Dr Pawan Kotwal, were among a large number of dignitaries who watched the evil going up in smoke this evening. Earlier, a ‘Jhanki’ was also taken out up to the venue by the organizers. Many devotees were seen dancing and enjoying the festivities. Earlier Shri Raghunathji Rath was taken out from Raghunath Mandir after performing of Pooja by president Dharmarth Trust Thakur Diwakar Singh and Secretary Shashi Khjauria. At Dussehra Ground Gandhinagar function, Minister for Revenue and Relief Raman Bhalla was the chief guest. He lit the pyre of the demon king Ravana by releasing an arrow and the effigies went up in flames. Thousands of people witnessed the festivities at both the places here. At Kathua, the grand function in this connection was held at Ramlila Ground. Over eight to ten thousand people witnessed the occasion. Similar functions were held at Hiranagar, Billawar, Basohli and several other parts of the district. At Reasi, a Jhanki was taken out from Chowk Chabutra to Parade Ground and then effigies of Ravana and others were burnt in flames. BJP MLA Baldev Raj Sharma, DC and SSP Reasi were also present on the occasion. Dussehra was celebrated with great enthusiasm and religious fervor at Udhampur this evening at sports stadium, Udhampur. Thousands of people participated in the celebrations where the effigies of Ravana, Kumbkarna and Meghnatha were consigned to flames marking victory of truth over evil. MLA Udhampur, Mr. Balwant Singh Mankotia, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Udhampur- Reasi range, Mr. Jagjit Kumar, District Development Commissioner, Udhampur, Mr. Baseer Ahmed Khan, SSP Udhampur, Mr. Shakeel Ahmed Beig, Addl. DC, Mr. Rajinder Singh, Deputy Controller Civil Defence, Udhampur, Mr. Bodh Raj, President, Dussehra Celebration Committee, Satpal Sharma, Civil Defence Wardens, prominent persons and people in large number were present on the occasion. Like in different parts of the country and state, People in Kishtwar District also celebrates Dussehra festival marking the victory of good over evil at Kishtwar and put the effigies of Ravan, Kumkaram and Megnath to flames. An impressive function was organized at Chowghan ground Kishtwar where more than 10000 people from different walks of life participated in celebration. On this occasion the Janki’s with Ram, Lakshman, Hunuman and others were prepared by Adarsh Dramatic Club, who stage a Ram Leela show every year in Kishtwar and cumulates its 10 days Ram Leela function on the eve of Dussehra function, District Administration and police have made an elaborated arrangements for todays function including the tight security cover were put into place since last evening. President of Adarsh Dramatic Club, Thakur Madan Lal Bhandari thanks the people of Kishtwar for their participation in during 10 days Ram Leela function which was organized by the club at Ram Leela ground Kishtwar.
