Compensate losses to fruit growers: Mehbooba to govt | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Oct 6 : Expressing concern over the sudden change in the weather resulting in heavy losses to horticulture and agriculture sector in the Noorabad, Wachi and Shopian areas, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said the resident of the area has suffered huge losses due to the destruction caused by the gusty winds. In a statement, Mehbooba said the locals associated with the fruit business have suffered huge losses as fruit bearing trees got uprooted in several villages. The apple orchards faced the brunt of the windstorms and the fruit growers are under huge losses. The sudden change in the weather and cyclonic storm in several villages of Noorabad and Shopian Wachi including Harmain, Reshpora, Padarpora, Muradpora, Wangipora, Chakchullan, Reshnagri, Jamnagri, Hajipora, Chottigam and adjacent villages. Mehbooba said this is not the first time that the area has faced such calamities, but this has happened several times in the past. Beside the fruit production was already low this time as the growers face the natural brunt which adds to their miseries. So it is the obligatory responsibility of the government to take necessary steps to compensate the losses. Mehbooba expressed sympathies with the resident of the villages over their loss and has pressed the administration to chalk out the estimation of the losses. She said that the Horticulture department and concerned officials should take immediate necessary measure to ensure for the compensation to be paid to those who have suffered huge losses. She also said that the field survey should be done by the Deputy Commissioner to immediately assess the loss to the standing crops and fruit grower. She asserted that the District administration should assure the farming community that they will be adequately compensated for the losses suffered due to the rains and winds.
