J&K RTI Movement organizes training workshop on RTI Act in Poonch

October 6th:In order to sensitize civil society and media about provisions of J&K
RTI Act 2009 a one training workshop on Right to Information
was organized by J&K RTI Movement in collaboration with Commonwealth
Human Rights Initiative and J&K Pahari Welfare Forum in Poonch
town on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion State President of Pahari
Welfare Forum Shri Lokesh Sharma thanked RTI Movement activists for
organizing such awareness programme in Poonch district where hardly
such awareness programme or workshop has been organized by any NGO or
Government organization . He assured RTI Movement of full support
from his organization and appealed the government to cooperate with
RTI applicants when they intend to file applications under RTI Act.
Convener J&K RTI Movement Dr Muzaffar Bhat gave a detailed lecture on
J&K RTI Act 2009 and explained important sections and sub sections of
this act before the participants of the workshop. Dr Muzaffar said
that it is basically the duty of government to create awareness
about RTI Law as per section 23 of J&K RTI Act 2009 , but it is so un
fortunate that government is not taking any concrete steps regarding
RTI awareness among common people living in various parts of J&K
state. Government must publish RTI booklets in urdu , hindi & english
so that common masses living in far flung areas of state start
accessing information from various public authorities under RTI Act Dr
Muzaffar added.
Noted journalist Shafiq Mir stressed upon the newly elected panches
and sarpanches to make best use of RTI law in order to ensure
accountability and transparency in the administration. People have
right to know how the government is spending funds meant for various
developmental schemes and for this a massive awareness about RTI is
need of the hour Shafiq Mir said while addressing the participants.
Senior RTI Activist Dr Sheikh Ghulam Rasool gave a historic background
of RTI Movement in India and J&K. He said that RTI can play a pivotal
role in transforming electoral democracy into participatory democracy.
It was decided during the workshop that Shri Lokesh Sharma will be
coordinating activities of RTI Movement in Poonch district and he was
unanimously nominated as Poonch district coordinator of J&K RTI
Movement. Among others who spoke on the occasion included Moulana
Basharat Hussain, Dalgit Singh , Ravinder Kumar , Sunil Sharma and
scores of Sarpanches and Sarpanches from various villages in Poonch.
There was an interactive cum question answer session at the end of
the programme.
