Council invests on existing infrastructure | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SANJEEV SHARMA Sports & Allied News JAMMU, Oct 06: The sheer lack of futuristic approach and vision on part of the autonomous sports body resulted into the J&K State Sports Council invest most of the funds, at its disposal, on existing infrastructure. Notwithstanding the paucity of funds, as admitted by the Minister for Sports, R S Chib himself, the Council kept on spending on projects of little importance and utility. In the absence of long term planning and sports policy, the State Sports Ministry has not been able to make optimum use of the Central assistance too, for rejuvenating the sports infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. Unmindful of the priorities, the Council’s engineering wing recently replaced the already in good shape the flooring of the corridor within the indoor complex ignoring the adjoining roller skating rink which has developed cracks and is in a dilapidated condition. Furthermore, the single court volleyball arena has been destroyed to make it a two-court open air flood light playing facility, little knowing that the game has already becomes indoor at the national level. Moreover, being a rural game, it hardly attracts the youngsters of the city areas. Interestingly, in his attempt to take sports out of the MA Stadium, the erstwhile Secretary, PS Gill had developed a volleyball court at Shastri Nagar playing field. Non-functional for the last three seasons, the only swimming pool in the state has been locked for making it all weather practice facility, ignoring the facts that there is paucity of funds. And, now when the media highlighted the plight of the prospective swimmers, the government, after wasting two years, invited a team of experts to seek their suggestion. If, the insiders are to be believed, the visiting team made an estimate of over Rs one crore to make the pool functional. In a similar unwanted act, the Sports Council added more accommodation to the sufficient existing structure at the small Green Field ground Gandhi Nagar. Also lacs were spend on creating dormitory and canteen for visiting teams, but of no use. May good sense prevail upon the Council. The autonomous sports body must not think of developing world class infrastructure but pay attention on maintaining the existing playing facilities in and around the MA Stadium.
