| Governor express concerns over alarming rate of road accident deaths | | Emphasise on the need to improve roads, streamlining traffic | | JAMMU | DEC 7 Governor Lt. General (Retd) S K Sinha today expressed serious concerns over the alarming rate of deaths due to road accidents in the state, which he described accounted for more than the causalities in terrorist violence. He also emphasized on the need to streamline traffic management along with the improvement in the condition of the roads to reduce the causalities on the roads. Inaugurating a Red Cross unit at the University of Jammu this evening, the Governor said the movement seeks to associate the younger generation with the mission and aims to inspire in them the spirit of selfless service. ‘The young volunteers can help immensely during man made and natural calamities’, he added. He also emphasized on the need for massive youth participation in Red Cross movement, emphasizing that they should have adequate awareness, training and inspiration to undertake the humanitarian work. The thrust of the Governor’s address focused on the alarming rate of deaths due to road accidents in the State. He underscored the need for strict adherence traffic rules, greater traffic discipline and stationing of mobile medical aid units on the highways. ‘Here the need for Red Cross volunteers arise to create awareness and come to the rescue of accident victims’, he said, adding that the collective effort can help in reducing accidents and providing prompt medical attention to the victims. General Sinha traced back the origin of Red Cross to 19th Century when its primary task remained restricted to help wounded soldiers during the wars. Gradually, he said, its role expanded manifold with Red Cross playing a pro-active role during natural and man made calamities. He referred to the service rendered by the Jammu and Kashmir Chapter of this international organization during devastating earthquake last year and said that the unit was mobilized to extend relief in the worst hit areas of Uri, Karnah, Poonch etc. Describing Red Cross as a unique Non Governmental Organisation, the Governor said that it has been working in tandem with various government agencies to provide respite to sufferers. He said the humanitarian work is a joint responsibility of the Government and the society as a whole and in this direction Red Cross can play and has been playing a pivotal role. He expressed happiness over the establishment of Red Cross Unit in the university and hoped that it will emerge as an important centre for creating awareness about various maladies and remains in forefront at the time of need.Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, Prof Amitabh Mattoo expressed satisfaction over the campus unit and said that it will play a prominent role in organising blood donation camps and creating awareness about various diseases. He presented a donation cheque worth Rs 3 lakh to the Governor for the State unit of Red Cross. The Honorary General Secretary of the State Red Cross, J G Nehvi gave a resume of the activities undertaken by the organization in the State especially during the devastating earthquake last year. He said the State Red Cross was among the first organizations to stand up in service of these earthquake victims. Truck loads of woolen blankets, kitchen sets and cash were dispatched to Uri, Karnah and other places and the same day followed by all efforts to comfort the victims following days on and provides them material assistance to help face the grim situation. The Red Cross also organized a 5-Day First Aid Training Programme in the campus. The Governor gave certificates of participation to 65 students. General Sinha also presented certificates of appreciation to the Universities of Kashmir and Jammu for their contribution during the earthquake and other eventualities.
