Local Bijli, Pani, Sadak leaders of Jammu silent over NC worker's custodial death

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 7: Leaders who are seen making noise on almost every other over issue concerning the common man have maintained criminal silence over alleged 'Custodial Death" of a National Conference (NC) worker for the reasons best known to them.
These leaders of Jammu show immense interest in the affairs of four departments' viz. CAPD, PDD, PHE and PWD. They are seen beating drums, burning effigies, taking out small rallies and sitting on hunger strikes often over rising prices, unscheduled power curtailments, water scarcity and bad roads.
And if you want to meet them, the best place is Rani Park or Kachi Chawani chowk. One cannot deny the fact that their protests do help in speedy redressal of grievances at certain places. But their silence over the alleged 'Custodial Death" of National Conference (NC) worker Syed Mohammed Yousuf Shah is intriguing.
These groups have not for even once raised even a meek voice against this grave incident. They are silent and if conversation with two or three of them is any indication, they have no interest in the killing of NC worker. They bluntly say that it is a non-issue for them since the dead man was an NC worker.
These leaders have their agenda rolled out and they do not want to deviate. The agenda is to keep protesting against price rise, gas cylinders, China-Pakistan nexus, terrorism, discrimination with Jammu, power curtailments, unplanned digging of roads, traffic congestion, pay commission issues, so on and so forth.
These leaders do not want to play big. For them, getting a ration card issued to the one not having it has more importance than Yousuf Shah's alleged custodial killing. For these mohalla leaders, redressing issues of commoners connected with water connections and electricity bills is far more important than asking the government about the alleged murder of a 'fixer' National Conference (NC) worker.
The murder of alleged NC fixer may have hit headlines across the country but it seems that till the time, these leaders do not get to know about the benefit of the protest or a statement over this issue, they are unlikely to start drum-beating over it. For them bribe giving or taking makes no difference.
For them, corruption is seemingly unrelated term when the issue is related to politicians, ministers and bureaucrats. They do not hesitate in saying that merely issuing a statement over this tricky issue would not make any difference. They say "We talked at length about this issue and found out that it does not concern commoners in Jammu region. We will protest but prefer keeping them low profile."
These leaders claim of having no truck with National Conference (NC) or Congress but when hard pressed, they reveal that local issues can be addressed only if you have some friends in the government. "Friends in the government are a must. You cannot have enemies everywhere. Friends are a must," added a leader.
