| NC is of family,by family and for family | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 7 : Political scientists define democracy as rule of the people,by the people and for the people.And if the same political scientists or analysists are asked to describe National Conference they will not hesitate characterising it as a party of the family,run by the family and for the family.
Ever since the birth of the National Conference in 1939 the party has been run and headed by Sheikh Abdullah for several decades ,except for those years he remained in prison when he had floated the Plebiscite Front.And when Sheikh Abdullah realised that he was as good as a setting sun he installed his son,Farooq Abdullah,as President of the National Conference in 1981.
In fact at that stage of time Sheikh Abdullah's son-in-law,G.M.Shah,had been nursing the hope of occupying the National Conference President's chair.However,Sheikh Abdullah wanted his son to succeed him as NC President even when the young Farooq had no political background and experience.Against this Shah was a cabinet minister and had been active during the freedom movement.
No doubt Farooq's installation caused heart burns to G.M.Shah Sheikh Abdullah possibly was in favour of passing on the NC Chairman's robe to his son and not to his son-in-law on the plea that the young face of Farooq could prove more charasmatic that Shah who had a bitter tongue.
Between 1981 and 2002 Farooq headed the NC when during this period he was also the Chief Minister.However,it was in 2002 that Farooq installed his son,Omar Abdullah,as party President.Luckily Omar abandoned the party Chief's post when he was elected as Chief Minister in 2009.Again the party chairman's post had to remain within the family,within the dynasty as Farooq Abdullah was installed as NC President soon after his son occupied the Chief Minister's post.
It has to be all within the family and within the dynasty.There is no organisational binding for it.There is such clause in the party constitution that makes it mandatory for the party to elect President and general secretary from within the Sheikh dyanasty.
But no NC leader has had guts or courage to oppose the tradition though there have been rumblings within.Those who talk of dearth of talent within the organisation are mistaken.There are leaders,who have worked with Sheikh Abdullah and have held ministerial posts for the last several years and they could have held the posts of president and general secretary of the National Conference.
Had they been given a chance they could have performed better than Omar Abdullah and his father.It is in the genes of the NC leadership that despite keeping bad health Sheikh Nazir,cousin of Farooq, has been allowed to continue as General secretary of the party.
Even after the party President,Farooq Abdullah,decided to instal another leader as additional general secretary and party spokesman he had no need to have a talent hunt because he had not to go out of the family entrance.As was expected he installed his younger brother,Mustafa Kamal,as additional secretary and party spokesman.
This way it is a family affair whether one thinks of the party or the Government.Mustafa Kamal is a talented person and by appointing him as Additional general secretary Farooq has killed two birds with one stone,diluting anger in Mustafa and ensuring family rule within the party.(eom) |
