| For complete CRPF withdrawal 15 new police battalions are needed in Jammu Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Oct 8 : Senior police functionaries are said to have conveyed to the state Government and the Union Home Ministry that in the face of the manpower shortage in the police total withdrawal of the CRPF from Jammu and Kashmir could destabilize peace.
Official sources said that police experts are of the opinion that the state police and the CRPF collectively have to perform two roles; one is on the anti-terror grid and the other in the law and order field.
The sources said that till the summer of 2009 the police and the CRPF had remained fully engaged in tackling the plans and activities of terrorists but the civilian strife that hit the valley in 2010 summer, in which over 111 people were killed, had placed additional and tricky responsibility on the shoulders of the security forces.
In reply to a question the official sources said that there was also need for modernization of police communication and transport system which could improve the mobility of the police force.
The sources said that the state Government and the union Home Ministry had to earmark sufficient funds for raising additional police battalions and on modernization of weaponry, means of communication and transport. They said at least for the next five years the centre should forget about withdrawing more CRPF companies from the state.
In reply to another question the sources said that the Government could carry out tot al withdrawal of CRPF companies only after 15 to 19 new battalions were added to the police in Jammu and Kashmir.
They said so long infiltration of militants, equipped with sophisticated weapons, continued from across the LOC and the IB incidents of subversive violence may not end in the state making it mandatory for the state and the centre to keep on increasing the manpower in the police.
