BJP in different 'directions' over custodial death row | Wants Omar to quit or CBI inquiry into incident …..? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 8: In contrast to clear and straight line adopted by almost all political parties in opposition over the controversy erupted in aftermath of NC worker's death in custody last week, it is only BJP which appears to be going in different directions and not adhering to one stand over the issue. While the Legislators of the party chose to maintain silence for first three days ,notwithstanding the fact the incident set the House into storm when the session was on, the state leadership, its spokesperson started giving statements only when the issue assumed volcanic proportions in terms of the political clamor against the NC, which is in the centrestage of whole controversy. Even as the state level leadership the senior functionaries instead of toeing a single line are giving statements which are contradictory. As the new issue has gripped the political scenario of the state , almost all parties have reasons to whip it up to hilt which they are doing for the last few days, with principal opposition party PDP taking a lead role. Inside the House when the session was on, BJP's legislators did not utter anything and their silence in the backdrop of unprecedented ruckus and clamour generated by PDP became somewhat conspicuous. However, as the issue itself started generating political heat with NC and Chief Minister in eye of the storm, realising gravity and seriousness of various aspects related with the incident ,state leadership of BJP could not afford to discount the revelations and happenings any longer. They first tried to rake it up by giving an angle of 'cash for MLC seat' scam , choosing not to hammer it out on dimension of death in custody. What came as an embarrassment to the state leadership, the leaders at the national level, particularly one of the senior the spokespersons reacted in sharper and stronger manner the other day, while the former tread the softer line . This drew some critcism from some quarters within the party on what they saw it as lack of cohesiveness in the policy on this crucial issue which resonated loudly at the national level too. This however prompted the state leadership to get vocal on the issue and behave as an opposition party. The leadership has started doing so but once again the voices are going in different directions. Ironically, the senior functionaries of the stature of general secretaries while reacting on the issue demanded Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's resignation , only to be contracted and 'denied' as having the party's stance by none other than the state president Shamsher Singh Manhas today. Manhas today denied as any of the party leaders having voiced this demand and said it was not the stance of the party at any level to ask the Chief Minister to quit. The party has however upped its pressure on CBI inquiry into Syed Yousuf's death and asked the coalition government to handover case to CBI for impartial inquiry. |
