ISI trying to mend fences with CIA and Washington | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 8: Gradually Islamabad has, despite assurances from China, its all weather friend, on continued military and non-military aid, started succumbing to the pressure mounted on it by Washington. The result has been willingness of the Pakistan's spy agency, the ISI, to cooperate with the American spy agency, the CIA, in hunting Al Qaeda activists. Reports reaching here from across the LOC have revealed that the ISI sleuths have been helping the CIA in its counter operations against the Al Qaeda activists. These reports said that the ISI operations resulted in the arrest of a number of Al Qaeda activists, operating in the Afghan-Pakistan border belts, and allowed the CIA sleuths to interrogate them. Not only this, the ISI has conveyed to Washington through the CIA, that it will not ask the US to suspend covert Drone strikes in Pakistan's tribal belts. According to these reports, the US-Pak ties had come under strain following secret US operations inside Pakistan resulting in the killing of Osama bin Laden in May. When the two sides were trying to iron out differences Islamabad's refusal to accept Washington's demand for Pak operations against activists of Haqqani group widened the gulf between Pakistan and America. The moment Islamabad realised that the 10-year long US-Pak ties had come under severe strain the establishment in Islamabad knocked the doors of Beijing. China gladly reciprocated by assuring Islamabad of its continued military and non-military aid. It was in the interest of China's extra territorial ambition that it wanted Pakistan to come out of the US umbrella and help Beijing in achieving its long-term goal of extending its influence to the South Asian region. But the ISI functionaries have a plan on befriending Washington which may not be in tune with the policy of the Government led by Asif Ali Zardari. The intentions of the ISI have serious ramifications because it does not want India to remain closer to Washington and Beijing. The second aim of the ISI is to milk both Washington and Beijing so that the two could help Pakistan emerge as a great military power and assist it in tackling the growing fiscal chaos. The CIA too could not adopt a stiff-necked response to the ISI moves because Pakistan can prove of vital importance for Washington in its ongoing war against terror. |
