Bhat creates ‘doubt’ to exonerate Abdullahs
Yusuf ‘custodial’ death
10/8/2011 11:54:43 PM
Early Times Report
srinagar, Oct 8: A vital witness in the Haji Muhammad Syed `custodial killing' case has created `reasonable doubts' about involvement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his father Dr Farooq Abdullah in the case.
The witness identified by a local news agency as Muhammad Yusuf Bhat of Ganderbal said: "I paid money to Yusuf for getting a MLC berth. However, I do not know whether it was for Omar Abdullah or Dr Farooq Abdullah", he said.
This statement, according to legal experts is sufficient o save the Abdullahs. The prosecution has to prove its case beyond any reasonable doubt. And, it fails to do so; the benefit of doubt goes to the accused. If Abdullahs are ever put on trial, this statement will exonerate them, they opined.
Realizing the importance of the witness, the government has reportedly urged him to remain tight lipped. His security has been enhanced and his house has been turned into a fortress.
Bhat refused to say anything about another witness, Salam Reshi's allegation that he had paid rs 34 lakh to Yusuf. I cannot comment on what Rishi said.. But I didn't pay money either to Dr Farooq or Omar."
Bhat also declined to comment what happened at the CM's residence last week when Rishi, Syed Yousuf and he were brought there. "Whatever I have to say I will say before judicial commission. People know what truth is," he said without elaborating.
Bhat, however, discussed internal bickerings in National Conference. "There are 50 people in Ganderbal who claim they are NC leaders. Sheikh Saloora, Abdul Rehman Mir, Mohammad Sultan Shaheen and others claim to be leaders," he alleged.
"I have served the NC for last 35-years and have braved militant threats all along. NC had been wiped out in Ganderbal till 2008 and it was because of my efforts that Omar Abdullah won in 2008. I had made promises with the people of Ganderbal but NC government didn't fulfil promised with the people," he added.
