Obama tells Pak not to view India its mortal enemy | | | Yet another time Washington has given a sound suggestion to Islamabad as far as its ties with India and Afghanistan are concerned.Soon after Islamabad became uneasy over the latest agreement between Kabul and New Delhi, reached between President Hamid Karzai and Prime Minister,Manmohan Singh during the former's visit to India,Washington felt concerned over the plans of Pakistan on sabotaging Indo-Afghan relations. It is in this context that the US President,Barack Obama, has cautioned Islamabad against adopting belligerent postures towards India.Obama has gone to extent of telling Islamabad not to view India as its "mort al enemy".It has told Islamabad to shed its Afghan-India Paranoia and realise that "peaceful approach" towards New Delhi would be in everybody's interest.Though there is nothing new in Obama's suggestion to Pakistan it does convey US support for resolving problems bet ween India and Pakistan through the process of dialogue and amicable negotiations. Obama is right because over the years New Delhi has conveyed to Islamabad that a stable Pakistan was in the interests of India.Delhi has also told Islamabad that a stable Afghainstan would be beneficial for the stability and normalcy of Pakistan as well as India. But Islamabad has always been apprehensive of the economic aid India had been providing for developing the basic infrastruct ure that had been ruined and destroyed in war ravaged Afghanistan.Pakistan's apprehensions are misplaced because India has not raised hue and cry when Islamabad entered into a military agreement with China, which is considered India's enemy number one.India has maintained silence even when reports suggest that the ISI has been providing material, moral and financial support to the programme of training militants and to the formation of militant outfits in Bangladesh that could be sent to India for carrying out subversive acivities.India has not reacted when reports reached New Delhi that Pakistan had been increasing its areas of influence in Sri Lanka and Nepal. Rightly Obama has conveyed to Islamabad that Pakistan's real enemy was neither India nor Afghanistan but its poverty, illiteracy and rise of extremism and terrorism. If Washington wants Islamabad to act against the Haqqani group of rebels it is doing so in the int erests of Pakistan. If India demands action against those involved in Mumbai terrorist strike it wants Pakistan to get associated with the ongoing global war against terror. He has told Islamabad that cordial ties with India could help Pakistan to develop adding that lack of development has been another source of trouble for Pakistan.Washington firmly believes that if Islamabad, its Army and the ISI failed to carry out operations against terrorists of various hues and faiths it may pose a serious threat to the Government in Islamabad and people in Pakistan. Will Islamabad listen to Obama and abide by his sermon ? Indications are that even if the etablishment in Islamabad may start considering seriously Obama's suggestion its Army may oppose any move to shed hate India strategy. It is time for Islamabad to give up Kashmir centric approach and respond positively to New Delhi's offer for building cordial ties
