Tainted Congress ministers supporting Omar 'by design' | NC worker's murder controversy | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 9: Despite being embroiled in yet again an avoidable serious controversy, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has nothing to worry since Congress ministers who are facing several cases of corruption have pledged support to him. They have come in open to defence of the Chief Minister and while doing so, left even the close confidents of Omar behind. Law minister Ali Mohammed Sagar and Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather are yet to make resounding public statements over the alleged custodial death of NC worker Syed Mohammed Yousuf Shah at the private residence of Chief Minister but tainted congress ministers are seemingly in a race to outdo each other in giving clean chit to Omar Abdullah and his aides. They have been giving statement after statement and with such surety as if they were present at the place of occurrence. These Congress ministers are speaking in individual capacities and not even asking Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief Prof. Saif-ud-din Soz about the stand of their party over the issue. They are not even waiting for UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi both of whom have maintained discreet silence over the issue. Ask for the reasons and political observers would tell you that after this custodial killing controversy, Congress ministers especially those who are tainted see Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on a weak wicket. They know that Omar would not be able to escape impact of this murder controversy so soon and the longer the issue is stretched, better it would be for them since it would ensure government taking no action against them despite newspapers making too much of noise. Political observers affirm that Omar government has not taken any action against the tainted Congress ministers since complaints against them have so far remained confined either to the grievance cell of Chief Minster or to the closed corridors of Omar's office. Barring vindictive action against former PWD minister Ghulam Mohammed Saroori, Omar has reportedly preferred not to take any action against other tainted Congress ministers who are facing serious cases of corruption, fearing that the same could lead to crisis in the already fragile NC-Congress relationship. These tainted ministers have managed to get action against them in the Jammu and Kashmir State Accountability Commission stalled. They know that after this latest controversy, Omar Abdullah would never be in a position to take moral high ground over the issue of corruption. If ever they are caught red-handed, they know that they have an escape route available with them. "None is thinking about how weak Omar is getting with each controversy. Will the corrupt ministers and officers take his action against them lying down? They would not do so and instead, force Omar on back foot whenever any such issue comes up. It is because of this reason that tainted Congress ministers are backing him," said a political observer. He opined that it is the lack of trust in other NC leaders including Rather and Sagar which is preventing Abdullah's from demitting office. |
