"Yours faithfully, Sir. No need to worry as Yousaf died of cardiac arrest; had no external injury marks" | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 9: By saying that Mohammad Yousaf had on September 30 last died of cardiac arrest and he had no external injury marks, DGP Kuldeep Khoda Saturday provided chief minister Omar Abdullah a welcome breather. His statement comes a day after Omar asked a national TV news channel interviewer if he had anything concrete to substantiate his claim that NC worker Yousaf had died of police torture. Khoda was prompt to announce Saturday that the deceased had no external injury marks on his body. Quoting an interim post-mortem report, he also said Yousaf had died of cardiac arrest. Ever since Yousaf's death due to alleged police torture at his residence, Omar has been under immense attack by political parties and civil society members to step down to pave the way for an impartial probe into the circumstances that led to Yousaf's death. In his TV interview, Omar had specifically asked the interviewer if he had the medical report with him to prove that Yousaf had actually died of police torture. The interview was telecast late at night. The next day, Khoda came out with the Yousaf's interim post-mortem report. Even if the interim report was taken as true, there were several instances when people's hearts failed in situations that caused them mental stress. And, if Yousaf too had died under similiar situations, it definitely called for the registration of a "murder" case. Khoda assured a fair and transparent probe into the incident. It now remains to be seen if the probe would actually be "transparent". It, however, seems to be difficult for the state investigating agency which is under direct control of the government. The matter needs to be investigated by a non-state agency which is not under the state. Khoda said nothing would be hidden and everything would be brought out very truly and faithfully. Additional district magistrate, Srinagar, Mohammad Akbar has already begun a probe into the incident. Yusuf died allegedly in police custody after two fellow party workers had accused him of taking Rs 1.18 cr from them for getting them berths in the legislative council. According to the government version, the accused was summoned to the camp office of the chief minister where he was confronted with the allegation about taking money. Yusuf had admitted to taking money after which he was handed over to IGP crime branch for further investigation. |
