JU again to get JNU Don as its Vice-Chancellor? | Credibility At Stake | | Neha JAMMU, Oct 9: State Governor Narinder Nath Vohra, who also happens to be the Chancellor of Jammu University, has constituted a search committee to recommend a panel of three academics out of which one would be appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University. The new incumbent is likely to join the University in a couple of months, most probably in the second week of December, when the present incumbent Varun Sahni completes his what the bulk of teachers, students and non-teachers calls an "unsuccessful tenure" of three years. Sahni would be the first Vice-Chancellor in years who would be shown the door the day he completes three years in office "spending most of his time in", informed sources say, "politicking, manipulating things in a fashion that prevented the concerned authorities to look into the misdeeds of his predecessor Amitabh Mattoo, promoting sycophancy and sycophants and engaging certain pliable teachers in activities not connected with teaching". This opinion of informed sources, mostly connected with the University, speaks for itself. These sources also reveal that Sahni did try his best to "cultivate" the authorities in his "desperate bid for another term" but with no result. The decision of the authorities, according to these sources, has been "widely hailed by the teaching fraternity, students and those working in the registry, of course, with a grouse that the "wrongdoings of Varun Sahni have been ignored and he has been, like his predecessor, allowed to go scot-free". This is one issue that is "irritating all in the University, barring those few who played into the hands of Sahni and did what he asked them to do," also informs the sources. However, it is the other issue that has become a cause of concern for the faculty. The case in point is the rumour that "Sahni could be replaced by another academic from Jawaharlal Nehru University". Those hinting at the possibility of a JNU Professor taking over from Sahni are saying that "since the chairman of the search committee is someone who served the JNU for decades and who continues to maintain very good relations with the JNU Left leaning Dons, his natural choice would be someone from the JNU." The rumour has "disturbed" many on the campus because they feel the "appointment of yet another JNU Professor as Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University would simply mean the continuation of policies which led to the degeneration of the whole institution on an unprecedented scale". Their fear and anxiety appears well-founded when viewed in the light of what the University witnessed during the past nine years or so. Some of the teachers even went to extent of saying (of course, on the condition of anonymity) that "the very credibility of the Jammu University faculty is at stake". It needs to be underlined that the University of Jammu has been under the JNU dons for almost 15 years now. It all started with Professor RR Sharma, a choice of the then NC government. One can share all other views of those feeling perturbed over the possibility of some JNU Professor again becoming Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, but one cannot sympathize with them when they say that "their credibility is at stake". They are responsible for the situation they are in. Had they worked hard and shown their worth, as it happened before RR Sharma took over as Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, things would have been altogether different. Since most of the faculty members remained engrossed in petty politics, they did not create for themselves any place in the academic circles. They have to sit down and find where they went wrong. It's no use crying for a thing one doesn't deserve. First deserve them desire is the old saying. They have to create for themselves a place in the academic circles across the country if they wish to have what the JNU dons are getting for various reasons, including intense lobbying and connections at right places. |
