10/10/2011 9:40:15 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu September 20
Threatening to court arrest till a comprehensive settlement package is met, large number of displaced persons from PoK, displaced Families from Chhamb, Deva, Watala, Manawar, Bhimber Mirpur, Kotli Poonch& Muzafarabad today Court arrested in Jammu and Hira Naga (Kathua District )
families were displaced during partition of the country in 1947 and subsequent wars with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. They alleged that the Union government has gifted their land and other properties to Pakistan under the Shimla Agreement signed in 1972. Before courting arrest large number of displaced refugees assembled in Gole Market Park, Gandhi Nagar and moved to police station Gandhi Nagar. Even after 64 years of independence these families have not been registered till date. They alleged because of the non-status to the refugees, the families are in abject poverty and both the central and state government have shown little interest in providing them with the much promised comprehensive settlement package. Most of them alleged that because of the intermittent skirmishes and heavy firings by the Pak army the lives of majority of them remains till date destablised. Their wards have remained illiterate and unemployed under these disturbed conditions. A meager relief of Rs 100 to 500 has been disbursed to them in the past and false promises were made by subsequent governments that they will be settled in their homeland after getting back the area which is under Pakistani occupation. The front will continue its agitation for the rights of these displaced persons (DPs) numbering about 15 to 21 lakhs. The present movement of courting arrest will continue till the government delivers justice. They alleged on the one hand Union government and state government are framing policies to help terrorists to cross over to this side of the state for their rehabilitation, where as till date no package has been implemented for them. The Chief Minister is anxious to pass a bill in the assembly for grant of mercy to Afzal Guru, the master brain behind Parliament attack. Whereas the PoK refugees are being fired upon and sent to jail whenever they stage protest in support of their demand for a final settlement.
