Sham for prioritizing JK in planning process | Address declining child sex ratio: Syeda | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR OCTOBER 10: Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma has urged the Planning Commission team to fix special para-meters for Jammu and Kashmir while carrying out the future planning process in view of its unique topography. He said that ground situation of State’s tough terrain must be taken into consideration as it cannot be compared with other States of the country. While briefing the Planning Commission team at a high level meeting of officers held here today, convened to take stock of the steps taken by the State to address the adverse and steeply declining child sex ratio and other allied issues in the State, the Minister said that government has already initiated several measures in this direction and the results are encouraging. He said NRHM summelans have been held in every district of the state and the issue has been widely discussed with cross section of the society and joint efforts are being made to improve the female sex ratio in the State. He said vigorous awareness campaign has been launched in the state to highlight the impact of the declining female sex ratio in the society. Various social/ religious organizations, educational institutions are voluntarily coming forward to educate the people to deal with this human issue. The Minister said that government has sealed as many as 67 ultrasound clinics in the State and initiated legal proceedings against people involved while violating the PNDT Act. A special award has been instituted for the whistle blowers who will give correct information about the illegal sex determination. It has been noticed that there is marginal change in the mindset of the people after launching the campaign. Expressing satisfaction over the overall healthcare scenario and measures initiated to improve the female sex ratio in the state, the Member of the Planning Commission of India, Dr. (Ms) Syeda Hameed said that Central Government was keen to provide better facilities to Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the health sector. She said flagship programmes of central government have been launched to improve the existing infrastructure and plugging the gaps. She said central government was contemplating to realign the flagship programmes with more flexibility according to the specific requirements at the local level
