Violence and Valley are synonym | | | Unrest and Kashmir have become synonym.Violence and valley are no longer different. It has been there right from 1989 when Pakistan sponsored militancy took roots in Kashmir.Since then it has been hide and seek game between unrest and civilian strife, between violence and development. In fact for violence there should be a cause. There needs to be factors that could trigger civilian strife. But in Kashmir one has not to wait for factors and reasons.Ideas keep on multiplying giving scope to events that lead to violence and strife.During the summer of 2010 the valley was plagued by unprecedented civilian strife in which about 120 people were killed in clashes between the demonstrators, protesting against police action, and the security forces. As violence and protest rallies spread voices condemning human rights violations multiplied.Demands rent the sky seeking resignation of Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah. And the tension ridden valley would have seen Omar out of his office had not the Congress high command and Rahul Gandhi in particular lent support to the Chief Minister thereby allowing him to carry on. Both people and the Government were quite happy when their fears of repeat of 2010 summer events in the current summer season proved wrong with highly successful and event free tourist traffic and pilgrimage to Amarnath shrine. The marked decline in the level of militancy related violence and activities had further encouraged the National Conference led Government to take it easy as far as governance is concerned.Omar Abdullah had been told by those who surround him that he had become indispensable in Jammu and Kashmir in the eyes of the Congress led UPA Government. The centre avoided giving much heed to the demand of the state Congress leaders favouring rotational Chief Ministership in the state as had been experimented between 2002 and 2008. All of a sudden peace and normalcy, even if they were tied to a fragile thread, were broken over the allegations that one National Conference activist,Syed Mohd. Yousuf, had died in police custody.Yousuf's death in police custody would have not rocked and rattled the valley had not two NC activists held him responsible for having taken Rs.1.18 crores from them for securing berth in the council of ministers and to the Legislative Council and the amount had to be paid to NC president,Farooq Abdullah. The PDP leadership has been in the forefront of those who reject the Government claim that Yousuf had died of cardiac arrest. As voices demanding Omar Abdullah's resignation became louder the NC leadership has accused the PDP leadership of being power hungry.Did the NC leadership ever display its hunger for power between 2002 and 2008 when the state had PDP-Congress Government ?Yes,if staging loud protests against the ruling elite is a sign of hunger for power. The NC leadership seems to have mishandled Yousuf's demise case leaving scope for misgivings and mistrust.Instead of ordering a magisterial inquiry to find out whether the incident warranted further investigation the Chief Minister should have handed over the case either to the CBI or to a judicial probe.Let Omar initiate measures that could defuse the crisis.
