NC was always power hungry' | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 10: MLC Ajay Sadhotra has accused Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of being power hungry. Well, all political parties want power. In fact the very object and purpose of a political party is to occupy the seat of power. Ajay was addressing a public meeting at Ajeet Nagar, Gol Gujral yesterday. Ajay perhaps is not aware of the history of his organization. Here an attempt is not being made to support the PDP. The aim is to set historical records right. The founder of National Conference, Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah first sought an apology from Maharaja Hari Singh for launching the Quit Kashmir Movement in 1946 and, according to renowned historian Shabnam Qayoom had compromised his integrity and movement to get a ministerial berth in Hari Singh's cabinet. And, after roaring in 1953, Sheikh took every possible step to regain power after his release. However, the Congress leadership never considered him for the chair. Finally Sher-e-Kashmir ended his 22-year political wilderness in 1975 to achieve power. This was the time when, according to his own workers, Sher-e-Kashmir fell from grace. Sheikh vehemently opposed Congress in early 70s but formed the government with their support in1975. Former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah liaised with the opposition after the death of his father. But when Indira Ganhi removed him in 1984, Farooq became a good boy and in the coming years became Late Rajiv Gandhi's best friend. |
