| Will Omar accept Mehbooba's suggestion ? | | | Exchange of anger coated words, if not pleasanteries, between the leader of the opposition, Mehbooba Mufti,and Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah,over the death of one NC activist, Syeed Mohd. Yosuf, in mysterious circumstances,has soiled the political atmosphere in the troubled Jammu and Kashmir state.When Ms Mehbooba demanded that Omar should quit she was accused by the NC leadership of being power hungry.And Mehbooba was quick to retaliate telling the NC leadership that the PDP is not wishing to regain power through undemocratic practices but would be back in power with the support of the voters.This way the PDP leadership seems to be confident of its gains in the process of elections whenever they are held.Well the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are due in 2014 and hence the PDP has to wait for three years for testing its strength in the poll battle.There can be nothing definite about political developments.And there is no bar on holding a midterm elections.No doubt the current political and constitutional situation does not warrant midterm poll nothing can be said with certainity about it.
If the situation does not call for a midterm poll it should not leave scope for any complacency on the part of the Chief Minister.Atleast for the sake of establishing his credibility as an honest and fearless political leader he needs to consider the latest suggestion from Mehbooba with considerable seriousness that it deserves.Ms Mufti has stated that she was not demanding resignation of the Government but of the Chief Minister. She has suggested to Omar Abdullah to appoint his uncle Mustafa Kamal as acting Chief Minister till the mystery behind Yosuf's death was resolved.Her suggestion is worth consideration because one does not foresee impartial probe when Omar ,against whom charges have been levelled that he had been instrumental in handing over Yousuf to police where he allegedly was tortured to death.
The row over Yousuf's death in mysterious circumstances is unlikely to end with DG Police,Kuldeep Khoda, declaring that the post-morterm report had revealed that there were no torture marks on his body when Yousuf's son has photographs depicting torture marks.Just one thing seems to prevent Omar from accepting Mehbooba's demand of installing his uncle Mustafa Kamal,as acting Chief Minister though political decency demands Omar to step down till he is exonerated by the judicial or any other body which will be assigned with the task of investigating into Yousuf's death.
His problem is that even if he is given a clean chit by the inquiry committee will Mustafa Kamal step down and facilitate Omar to regain Chief Minister's chair ?Or will Mustafa play Anil Kapoor against Amrish Puri, as has been the story in a bollywood movie,refusing to handover power to Omar Abdullah? This can be the genuine fear gripping Omar's mind.But if he steps down till exonerated by the probe committee Omar will gain new heights in politics. |
