'Omar parroting withdrawal of AFSPA, DAA to divert public attention from Yousuf's case' | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 12: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his coterie of supporters have again stepped up the propaganda over the withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and Disturbed Areas Act (DAA) from some specified districts of Jammu and Kashmir regions. Ask for the reason and even a person having ordinary knowledge would tell you that the move is aimed at diverting public attention from recent furor over the alleged custodial killing of National Conference (NC) 'fixer' Haji Syed Mohammed Yousuf Shah. They would even explicitly state that Omar is playing wild card at a time when the entire valley is convinced that Yousuf knew much and was silenced. Nothing would convince ordinary Kashmiris. They know that if a constable of Jammu and Kashmir police (JKP) can manage autopsy reports, post-mortem details, and forensic reports, what would stop someone sitting at the top from managing the same without moving even an inch. Realizing the gravity of situation, Omar Abdullah has rightly begun parroting withdrawal of AFSPA, an issue which is merely symbolic in nature and does not connote much in the daily life of people of J&K. Interestingly, BJP state chief spokesperson and national executive member Dr. Jitendra Singh issued a timely statement over the issue of withdrawal of AFSPA. He reminded Omar that at a time when the General Officer Commander (GOC) Gen. Syed Atta Hasnain warns of all time high strength of militants waiting to infiltrate across LoC, his holding of meeting with Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram and seeking revocation of Disturbed Areas Act (DAA) and Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is merely aimed at diverting the public mind. Singh added that better would have been for the Chief Minister to avail of his meeting with Union Home Minister as an opportunity to explain facts behind mysterious death of National Conference activist Yousuf Shah in cash-for-MLC scam but by not doing so and instead taking of AFSPA withdrawal, Chief Minister has only tried in vain to divert the public focus from his alleged involvement in the Yousuf Shah case. This is a dangerous game, warned Singh and said that the Chief Minister is also following same practice which is followed by other so-called mainstream Kashmir-centric leaders who, whenever they find themselves caught on the wrong foot, try to raise issues with separatist undertones with twin objective of blackmailing the union government and at the same time seeking sympathy from Kashmir separatist camp. Reiterating BJP demand for a CBI inquiry into Yousuf Shah Case, Singh said that it is against law of justice to have an inquiry conducted by an agency or department which is subordinate to person or persons against whom inquiry is to be carried out. Jitendra Singh said the BJP has taken a very clear stand within the party on cash-for-MLC issue and suggested that other political parties should also follow the BJP example. In addition, Singh also cautioned against using Army as a tool to settle political scores and said that in matters like AFSPA, ignoring the opinion of Army and security experts could prove disastrous. He reminded that both Chief of army staff Gen. V.K. Singh as well as Union Defence Ministry A.K. Antony have emphasized need to continue with AFSPA in order to facilitate effective security arrangement in the state. He also asked the Congress party, as partner in state coalition government, to make its stand clear on the issue and give up its policy of fooling the people of state by avoiding to take a clear stand on a host of vital issues including implementation of 73rd and 74th constitutional amendment of the Indian constitution. He further added that with Rahul Gandhi and state Congress leadership taking opposite positions on the issue 73rd & 74th amendment, the Congress party stands fully exposed. |
