"Unintentional" remark on religion by woman lecturer leads to communal clash at Bhaderwah; 4 injured | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 12: A remark made "unintentionally" on religion by a female history lecturer today led to a clash between two communities inside the premises of government degree college at Bhaderwah in Doda, resulting in injuries to four persons, including three students. The "objectionable" remark was made by her during a routine question-answer session in the classroom. "It seems to be an unintentional and trivial mistake in speaking," deputy commissioner, Doda, Farooq Ahmad Khan said. "Of course, the remark was not made by her to hurt the religious sentiments of anybody," he added. While giving lecture in the classroom, the woman lecturer got involved in a discussion during which she made the obnoxious remark. Taking strong exception to it, some students of a particular community rose to their feet and protested. They later called leaders of Anjuman Islamia to the campus. As the word spread, leaders of other community also rushed to the college. Soon, there were slogans and counter-slogans by both sides. They later clashed as a result of which Anjuman Islamia vice-president Shahid Hussain and three students sustained injuries, the deputy commissioner said. Two of the injured students included Kailash Bharti, son of Om Raj, and Suresh Kumar, son of Girdhari Lal. While Shahid was referred to a Srinagar hospital, Kailash was shifted to the GMC hospital here. Tension gripped the communally-sensitive Bhaderwah town after the clash, with both the communities giving a call for bandh. Within no time, the shutters were downed by shopkeepers. To avoid any untoward incident, huge deployment of police was made in and around the town. "We have stepped up security and are monitoring the situation closely," Khan said. In reply to a query, he said section 144 had not been imposed in the town. "I have invited the members of the two communities to the Bhaderwah dak bungalow for a meeting to sort out the matter," he added. He said though none had come forward till late tonight, he expected to hold a meeting with them Thursday morning. The deputy commissioner said the Bhaderwah people were intelligent enough to understand that someone had tried to make an issue out of no issue. He hoped that the town would be normal by tomorrow and routine business activity would not be affected. |
