Early Times Report
JAMMU, October 13 : A 13 year old girl from Nowshera, today, underwent a high-risk major cardiac surgery in Bangalore, for valve replacement. The operation costing Rs 8 Lakhs was done by a team of renowned cardiac surgeons in an approximate 8 hours surgical process at Vikarm Hospital, a super speciality unit of Apollo and Jayadeva Hospitals.
Meenakshi, belonging to a BPL family, was diagnosed to be suffering from sub-aortic Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), prolapsed of Right Chamber into Left Ventricular Outlet (LVOT) and Left Ventricular Ejaculation Fraction (LVEF) reduced to 35%; which has posed serious threat to her life. Doctors at Acharya Sri Chandra Medical College advised open heart surgery, but the family having no means of livelihood could not afford the same. The defects were at final stages, with very less time left for surgical intervention to save her life.
The matter came to notice of Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nowshera, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, when Meenakshi’s father, Hardev Kumar, approached him for issue of BPL ration card. Upon enquiry it was informed that he wanted to raise money for her daughter’s operation.
The SDM called the medical reports and documents, which revealed alarming facts about Meenakshi’s heart defects being at terminal stages. The SDM immediately contacted Ayesha Amaan and Arun Singh, Founder and Managing Directors of Aryan Foundation, Bangalore. Aryan Foundation , agreed to provide all possible support in terms of logistics as well as entire cost of operation and stay at Bangalore, which ran into several lakhs of rupees.
Deputy Commissioner, Rajouri, G A Khwaja, approving the proposal of SDM Nowshera, released funds from Red Cross for travel arrangements of Meenakshi and three attendants to Bangalore.
Fresh examination and tests were again conducted at ASC Hospital for medical opinion and also advice about mode of travel. Cardiac Specialist Dr C D Gupta advised immediate open heart surgery without any loss of time as the minor girl’s condition was deteriorating every day.
Meenakshi was admitted in the Vikram Hopsital, last week. Operation was scheduled for October 11 but had to be postponed by two days due to some serious complications observed by doctors during pre-surgical procedures. Today a team of country’s top surgeons lead by Dr Devananda and Dr T R Raghu operated her for heart valve replacement in a rare major-risk surgery. Other specialists in the team were Dr Balu , Head Consultant and HoD, and Dr Ramesh along with others. After 8 hours long major surgical intervention, the operation was declared successful by Dr Devananada, who termed it “a miracle, as the heart condition had reached terminal stages”. The patient responded well to the surgery, but will have to be in hospital for next two weeks.
The local people have appreciated the prompt action of SDM Nowshera for saving the life a minor girl struggling critical heart defect which could have proved fatal otherwise if left unattended.
