| LeT planning strikes on critical infrastructure: Pranab | | | New Delhi, July 31: Pakistan-based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba is planning to carry out some strikes on critical infrastructure, military targets and religious places, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee informed the Lok Sabha on Monday. "It has been evident for some time now that the scope of such terrorist activities is on the increase," he said responding to concerns voiced by BJP Deputy Leader V K Malhotra.
Information with security agencies also indicates the possibility of a nuclear installation being considered for strike by the LeT module, he said.
"A series of special security measures have already been taken, and some are under consideration to prevent any such attempts from succeeding," he said.
Raising the issue during zero hour, Malhotra referred to remarks made in a television interview by National Security Adviser M K Narayanan that one of the atomic energy installations was under LeT threat.
He wanted to know whether the Prime Minister was aware of such threats. "It is a very serious matter," he said.
Leader of Opposition L K Advani said this was not a small matter and sought a government response from the Prime Minister.
Media`s apprehensions uncalled for: Minister
Terming as "uncalled for" apprehensions that fundamental rights of the media will be encroached upon, government today told Lok Sabha that a meeting with stakeholders will be held on August 14 on a proposed law to regulate the broadcasting media before going to the Union Cabinet.
"The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is considering a comprehensive legislation to regulate the broadcasting media in consultations with the media and concerned ministries," Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi said during question hour.
"The proposal is still at the consultation stage and details have yet to be finalised," he said replying to queries from Ravichandran Sippiparai (MDMK), Rewati Raman Singh (SP) and Mohammad Salim (CPI-M).
On whether the government was taking any step to check "emerging monopolies" in the media sector, Dasmunsi said the proposed bill "is now under process at the drafting stage...(we are) consulting ministers and stakeholders".
"I do share the concern of the member that monopoly control on FM station, electronic media and newspaper has become very prominent in Indian scene...Therefore, I am having a meeting with the stakeholders on August 14, before I proceed to the Cabinet (for the Bill`s approval)," he told Sippiparai.
After its passage in the Rajya Sabha last week, the Lok Sabha today took up for consideration the controversial Office-of-Profit Bill.

A resolution unanimously passed by the house said "Lok Sabha conveys its deepest condolences, sympathy and support of the people of India to the people of Lebanon in this difficult time."
Lok Sabha expresses grief over loss of lives in rains
The Lok Sabha today expressed grief at the loss of lives in incessant rains and floods in Maharashtra and Gujarat.
It also condoled the death of 16 Indian nationals in a fire in a building in Bahrain.
The House paid tributes to former member S M Guraddi who died on July 23 at Bijapur in Karnataka.
