7th JK Science Congress | Pleanry lectures organised on 2nd day | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 14:Three plenary lectures were held on the second day of 7th JK Science Congress (7JKSC-11) at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium Complex, University of Jammu, Jammu. Prof J. M. Khorana from University of Delhi delivered the first plenary lecture on the topic – Greener Methodology in Organic Synthesis. He discussed the applications of Nanoparticles in organic synthesis. Prof.. Khurana said that nanoscience is an emerging research area for the young bio-chemical researchers. Dr. A.K. Kriplani, Senior Consultant, Inderprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi and eminent surgeon, spoke on the problems and management of growing obesity in Indian population in second plenary lecture of 7JKSC-11. In his power presentation, he disclosed that about 10-15% of urban population is obese. He further stated that India is being regarded as the obesity capital of the world. Morbid obesity is becoming another epidemic within the obesity epidemic. In addition to other medical problems, an obese person faces, the shortening of the life expectancy by 7 years is the most serious. In third Plenary lecture, Dr. R. Vishwakarma, Director, IIIM, Jammu talked about the drug discovery from natural products. He claimed that the journey of chemical science has just begun. Inspite of the advancements in science and technology, the researchers are yet to understand the relationship between the chemical structure and the biological activity. He further explained the latest research projects being currently undertaken at IIIM, Jammu. Prof. Y. R. Malhotra, former Vice chancellor, University of Jammu, chaired all above three sessions. Eminent among the audience were Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, Jammu and Prof. I A Hamal, Vice Chancellor, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU), Rajouri.
