Support for Bhushan in Kashmir is not support for Anna's movement | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 14: Invariably people and the political leaders in the Kashmir valley remain unmoved, unaffected and untouched by even major events in rest of the country. And if a group of people, led by Langate MLA, Er Abdul Rashid, and the separatists, besides the members of the Kashmir Bar Association, condemned the attack on a Supreme Court lawyer, Prashant Bhushan, in New Delhi the other day one need not feel amazed and intrigued. Abdul Rashid went to the extent of staging a protest dharna in the state's summer capital while blaming a small group of Hindu fundamentalists for manhandling Prashant Bhushan, who is a member of the team Anna. What is surprising is that when the valley and its people remained unmoved by the protest fast launched by Anna Hazare in New Delhi in August last what prompted them to register condemnation against manhandling of a team Anna member, Prashant Bhushan? What could be the reason for civil society members, Kashmir Bar Association members and the separatists to raise their voice against attack on team Anna member when they had not allowed the Anna wave to cross into Kashmir ? The reason is simple. Groups of people, besides separatists and Bar members protested against manhandling of Prashant Bhushan because he had touched a topic quite dear to separatist and their supporters. During the last over two months Prashant Bhushan was a nonentity for the Kashmiri separatists but became a hero in the eyes of Kashmiris when, in one of his interviews, he had stated that the Government should cultivate people in the valley by repealing AFSPA and by withdrawing troops from within the valley. So far so good. He had added that in case people in the valley did not like to stay with India a plebiscite be held and in case they want to stay out they should be allowed to do so. This statement, for which Bhushan has no regrets, raised the stature of Prashant Bhushan in the valley to a hero from a mere zero. What Bhushan said has been heard from the separatists during the last over two decades. Thus the attack on Bhushan by activists of some Hindu fundamentalist organisation was inevitable. Had Bhushan criticised the separatists' demand for holding a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir would people like Er Abdul Rashid and leaders of separatist groups have supported Anna team member? Certainly not. Hence one need not construe that support for Bhushan is Kashmiris' support for Anna Hazare. If groups of people in Kashmir have condemned attack on Prashant Bhushan by Hindu radicals it is a support for what Bhushan said on the Kashmir issue. Over the years those Indian politicians or civil society activists who support right of self-determination become darlings for the separatists and their supporters irrespective of their (plebiscite supporters) religion, caste, creed or political affiliation. If Prashant Bhushan is a hero in the eyes of Abdul Rashid and others he may lose this grandeur if he changes his stance on the Kashmir issue. |
