Bhaderwah still tense; police fire teargas shells to disperse youth who stoned them | | | Asif Ali Naik Jammu, Oct 14: As Bhaderwah continued to be tense for the third consecutive day today, police fired teargas shells to disperse the angry youth who stoned them outside Jamia Masjid after Friday prayers. At least eight to 10 persons, including police and CRPF personnel, were wounded, according to police sources. The tension in the communally-sensitive Bhaderwah town erupted Wednesday last after a woman history lecturer made certain "objectionable" and unwelcome utterances on a religion during routine discussion with students in the classroom. In protest, students of a particular community had demonstrated inside the college premises. Outsiders belonging to both the communities had soon entered the campus and clashed. Yesterday, a magisterial probe was ordered into the incident and a request was made by the Doda district administration to the members of both the communities to maintain communal peace and brotherhood. On the call of Anjuman Islamia, members of one community today observed a complete bandh in Bhaderwah town, while those of the other kept their shops and other business establishments open. Bandh was also observed in Doda and Kishtwar towns. Soon after the Friday prayers ended in the afternoon, Anjuman Islamia president Hairat Farash appealed to his community members to maintain peace. Some youth, however, resorted to sloganeering after they stepped out of the mosque. While they protested, police reached the spot. There were hot exchanges between the two sides after which some the youth turned violent and resorted to stone-pelting. In retaliation, police resorted to mild lathicharge and also fired teargas shells to disperse them. In the ding-dong battle which continued for over an hour, eight to ten persons, including police and CRPF personnel, sustained minor injuries. Bandh, however, passed off peacefully in Doda and Kishtwar towns as there was no report of any protest from there. Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was in the town in connection with a meeting when protesters and police clashed outside the Jamia Masjid. Later, he was stated to have taken a meeting of both the communities and appealed them to maintain peace. |
