Shri Amarnathji Yatra-2011 | Guv applauds officials, commoners for smooth conduct of holy pilgrimage | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 14: Governor N.N.Vohra today thanked the state administration, local stakeholders, people at large and all those associated with management of Shri Amarnathji Yatra 2011 for contributing towards its smooth conduct. Speaking after giving away insurance claim cheques to those whose ponies/horses were involved in accidental deaths during the Shri Amarnathji Yatra this year, at a function held at Raj Bhavan today, Vohra observed that collective efforts of every one resulted in the smooth and peaceful conduct of the pilgrimage. He complimented Deputy Commissioners of Anantnag and Ganderbal, who were present at the function, and their concerned officers, for their commitment to ensuring a smooth Yatra. Vohra said that many new initiatives were taken by the Board to bring about progressive improvements in the Yatra and, in this connection, referred to the scheme launched with the support of the state government last year for compensating the loss suffered by the pony/horse owners on account of the accidental deaths of their animals during the Yatra. He said that this year, compensation amount was raised from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 25,000, adding that further discussions would be held with the Animal Husbandry Department and the Deputy Commissioners to explore the possibilities of further enhancing this amount, during Yatra-2012. Referring to the lower compensation, sanctioned by the Insurance Company this year in certain cases, on technical grounds, the Governor observed that, as a special gesture the Board shall pay the differential amount to the concerned pony/horse owners. He advised the pony/horse owners to deploy only healthy animals during the Yatra, to avoid fatalities and urged the Animal Husbandry Department to enhance the facilities for animal health care at Chandanwari, Sheshnag, Panjtarni, Holy Cave and Baltal Camps. Governor gave away cheques to over 70 pony-wallahs, involving payment of approximately Rs. 17 lakh as compensation for the loss they had suffered due to accidental death of their ponies/horses during Shri Amarnathji Yatra this year. Minister for Forests Mian Altaf lauded the efforts of Governor and the shrine board for increasingly involving the local stakeholders in the conduct of the Yatra and thereby extending large economic benefits to them. He expressed his gratitude to the Governor for taking innovative measures for protection of environment and ecology in the Yatra area during the past three years. He observed that the Yatris are our honoured guests and we are obliged to ensure safe and secure pilgrimage. R. K. Goyal, Principal Secretary to the Governor and Chief Executive Officer of the Shrine Board, gave details of the various new initiatives taken by the Board on the instructions of the Governor to bring progressive improvement in the Yatra management.
