Unlike Gujarat officers, NC men did not support their colleague | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 15: The persecution of an IPS officer from Gujarat, Sanjeev Bhat has evoked widespread condemnation. Politicians, civil society actors and even men in uniform have expressed solidarity with the detained officer. Sanjiv Bhatt has accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of complicity in the 2002 communal riots. Bhatt has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court pointing to Modi's involvement in the 2002 Gujarat communal carnage. He was arrested Sep 30 for allegedly forcing a police constable, K.D. Panth, to sign a false affidavit about his attending a meeting called by Modi soon after the Godhra train burning that sparked the riots. This is perhaps the first time when the men in uniform have defied the code of conduct that governs them. They have come forward openly to support their colleague. A National Conference worker was allegedly killed in the custody of Crime Branch recently. He was in Chief Minister's residence on September 29 to discuss a deal involving a hefty sum. he was handed over to the Crime Branch where he succumbed to alleged torture. The killing evoked a stir in the Valley with the separatists including Geelani and Yasin Malik and the civil society workers expressed support to the bereaved family. However, the NC workers were conspicuous by their absence. They did not even issue a statement to mourn the death of their colleague. |
