NC a liability, not a boon, for Congress | Death of Yousuf | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 15: Resentment is brewing among Congressmen in Jammu and it is extremely likely that it may explode in the form of a revolt against Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi. They are fed with the NC leadership. They have come to believe that the NC has become a "liability" for their party and that the party would be "doomed" if the NC is allowed to what they call "misrule" the state, in collaboration with "certain vested interests in the Congress, including half a dozen self-seeking ministers," for full term of six years. They are particularly angry with Rahul Gandhi, who, they believe, is "exerting unholy pressure on her mother and the Prime Minister in order to ensure the continuation of Omar Abdullah as Chief Minister even after January 4, 2012". What has added to the anger of Congressmen in Jammu is the "irresponsible" conduct of Rahul Gandhi and certain Congress ministers in the Omar Abdullah government during all these days of death of Haji Syed Mohammad Yousuf. Yousuf died in mysterious circumstances immediately he was handed over to the police by the Chief Minister on September 29. Yousuf was very close to the Abdullah family. Reports suggested that it was through Yousuf and others of his ilk that the owners of the NC conducted their "money-minting operations" and indulged in "political corruption". Reports also suggested that Yousuf was so close to the Abdullahs that he could make or mar anybody's life. In fact, according to reports, "Yousuf was a middleman between the Abdullahs and those who wanted to gain political favours". The death of Yousuf had stirred the whole of the state with the PDP and the Panthers party demanding resignation of Chief Minister, his father, who - apart from being the president of the NC - is Union Minister and MoS Home and members of the bereaved family held the Abdullahs squarely responsible for the death of Yousuf. The attitude of the PDP, the Panthers Party and members of the bereaved family has not undergone any change whatever. They continue to point fingers towards the Abdullahs. It was the situation as it developed in the wake of the death of Yousuf that the Congressmen in Jammu had hoped that Rahul & co would "see the writing on the wall and do something concrete to save the Congress party in the state from the impending disaster". They had pinned hope in Rahul Gandhi believing that almost all the established non-Congress and non-NC political groups in the state had been pointing fingers towards the Chief Minister and his father as well as the MoS Home. They had, in addition, expected the high command's intervention in the state calculated to dislodge the Chief Minister, who, they believe, "has been eroding the support-base of the Congress party in the state by his reckless actions, by his controversial statements and by acting in a fashion that has only discredited the ruling coalition". Although the Congressmen in Jammu have failed to evoke any favourable response from the "high command", they still feel that "they would be able to dislodge Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and see some Congressman taking over from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah". There are important leaders in the Congress in the state who also want Omar Abdullah to go. "Behind-the-scene activities", according to some insiders, "are also going on". The resentment among Congressmen and desire of some important Congress leaders to dislodge Omar Abdullah may change the whole political scenario in the state. In any case, Omar Abdullah would remain on tenterhooks for at least coming 80 days. Will Yousuf's death prove a blessing in disguise for the Congress party? Wait and see. |
