KU to host int’l conference on ‘Globalization and Eurasia’ | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Oct 16 The University of Kashmir is all set to discuss globalization vis-à-vis Eurasia at an international conference beginning on October 18. The four-day conference, fourth of its kind since 2006, is organized by the varsity’s prestigious Centre of Central Asian Studies (CCAS) to explore the impact and challenges of globalization on the countries of South, Central and West Asian and European countries in the vast Eurasian space. Governor NN Vohra, who is also the Chancellor of the Varist shall inaugurate the conference while Rajiv Sikri, former diplomat and Indian Ambassador to Kazakhstan will deliver the keynote address. The KU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Talat Ahmad would welcome the guests from India and outside. Prof Mushtaq A Kaw, Conference Coordinator and Director (Area Studies Programme) at the CCAS, said that the globalization is a multidimensional phenomenon with considerable bearing on the socio-economic, religio-cultural and politico-security scenario of the Eurasian region in particular and the world at large. “Though it fetched in multiple benefits to the region yet it exposed it to several complications; hence, its blessing is/was not without certain irretrievable costs to the people of the region including India,” he said. Prof Kaw said the study of these changes and challenges makes an interesting study as they contribute a great deal to reshaping of our conventional thinking, policy frame, world view and socio-economic, educational and cultural stereotypes. “Security threat apart, it forged a very tough competition among the Eurasian companies, corporations and their respective governments, and speeded up ruthless exploitation of natural resources, destruction of environment, indigenous identities and innate cultural species in the entire region and beyond,” he said. The sub-themes for the conference include Energy Politics, Cross-Border Relations, Regional Organizations, Agricultural and Industrial Relations, Multinational and Foreign Investment, Legal and Democratic Framework, Environment and Climate, Ethnicity and Disapora, Urbanization and Rural-Urban Migration, Education and Languages and Society and Culture. It is in this backdrop that CCAS decided to hold the four-day conference which has a wide participation from Russia, Britain, Italy, Poland, Zcech Republic, Iran, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Germany, Sweden, Thailand etc., Indian delegates apart. The Conference is being sponsored by the Kashmir University, University Grants Commission (UGC), J&K Bank and Public Diplomacy Division of MEA, New Delhi. Pertinently, the CCAS has been regularly holding such international -level conferences. The Centre envisions providing a platform for creating and enhancing intellectual space for inter-disciplinary research on the issues of historical and contemporary relevance. Prof GR Jan, the CCAS Director, said the conference is a part of the Centre’s regular endeavor to hold international level events on various themes.
