Criticism of Omar by Azad at this juncture meaningful
Is NC On Its Way Out?
10/16/2011 11:57:50 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 16: None in the state had expected that Union Health Minister and former J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad would expose Omar Abdullah-led coalition government and denounce its utter failure to complete the developmental works he had started in the Doda area to develop it and bring it at par with the developed areas of Kashmir Valley, but it has happened. It happened only yesterday. Azad was so upset, disgusted and disappointed that he lambasted the Omar Abdullah government, dubbed it as inefficient and accused it of not completing the projects he had started more than three years ago - works which, according to him, needed just three to four months for their completion and commission. What Azad said yesterday at Bhadrwah while censuring the Omar Abdullah government has inspired many in the Congress party, with some of them even claiming that the "Omar Abdullah is on his way out".
It bears recalling that that it was only on October 1 that Azad had sided with and defended Omar Abdullah by endorsing his suggestion that he would appoint a judicial commission to look into the circumstances leading to the death of NC loyalist Haji Syed Mohammad Yousuf. His death had created a sort of furore in the state and made parties like the PDP demand Omar Abdullah's head. The controversy has not yet died down. The critics of Omar and his government continue to demand his resignation and a CBI probe. The Panthers Party has even gone to the Supreme Court.
The change in the attitude of Azad towards Omar Abdullah, who is passing through a critical phase, is meaningful and significant. It appears behind-the-scene-activities undertaken by the detractors of Omar Abdullah have started changing things in New Delhi, notwithstanding the opposition of the Congress ministers to the idea of Omar Abdullah abdicating power in favour of the Congress party. These ministers, it needs to be noted, believe that they would be the losers in case Omar Abdullah was dislodged.
It is more than evident that the JKPCC and most of the ministers are treading different paths. In fact, an overwhelming majority in the JKPCC and district Congress committees is not happy with the Congress ministers. Their argument is that the Congress ministers are interested more in the promotion of their own personal interests rather than in the betterment of the party and consolidation and expansion of its support-base. So much so, the bulk of the JKPCC accuses the Congress ministers of "letting down their constituencies and Congress workers operating at the grass root level". However, the "negative" attitude of the Congress ministers has not "dampen the spirit" of those in the congress who want the Congress to rule the state after Omar Abdullah completes three years in office.
It is not a secret that a section of the local Congress leadership, ably backed by certain senior leaders at the centre, wants Omar Abdullah to go after he completes three years in office. Its argument is that the "continuation of Omar Abdullah after December this year will not be in the interest of the Congress party in the state and that if the Congress is play some role in the state politics, the transfer of power from the NC to the Congress is a must". The open criticism of Omar Abdullah government by Azad could be construed as an indication that the dislodge-Omar-campaign has gained some momentum.
Azad is not a loser talker and, hence, his adverse comments on the Omar's performance are very significant and meaningful. It would not be out of place to point out that some detractors of Omar Abdullah have told this correspondent on the condition of anonymity that "Omar Abdullah would be replaced before December". All this suggests that the position of Omar Abdullah is becoming untenable by the day.
