Zargar for devising technology to increase livestock productivity
12/21/2006 11:31:56 PM

Jammu, Dec 21
Stressing on adoption of area and species specific approach for improving livestock productivity, Minister for Agriculture and Cooperative Mr. Abdul Aziz Zargar has called for devising new technological inputs focusing on bettering yield rate of milk, meat and wool per animal. He said concerted efforts of veterinarians, scientists and government agencies are urgently needed for effectively meeting the challenge of making the state self sufficient in animal food products.
Mr. Zargar was addressing veterinary anatomists at their 11th Annual Convention held at Sher-i-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology at R. S. Pora today.
Over 200 eminent scientists drawn from various national institutes and universities are deliberating in three day long convention focusing on “Recent Advances in Anatomical Concepts and Techniques for Improvement of Livestock Production and Health”.
“Notwithstanding world’s 15 percent livestock population in India with highest production of milk the productivity per unit animal is much lower as compared to other developed countries”, Zargar said and emphasized on conducting research for increasing productivity per unit animal as well.
The Minister called upon scientist fraternity to come up with innovative technology for bringing milk revolution in our state, which he said is bestowed with ideal resources for animal rearing. Livestock rearing promises hope in faster socio-economic upliftment of people in rural areas where over 70 percent population is involved in agriculture and allied sectors, he maintained.
Earlier, Vice Chancellor SKUAST-J Prof. Nagendra Sharma in his speech remarked that animal husbandry has to significantly contribute in giving fillip to Indian economy as a sizeable chunk of population is associated with livestock rearing. He said intensive research is required for unraveling new techniques for boosting milk and meat production.
Describing ‘Veterinary Anatomy’ as mother of all veterinary sciences Mr. Sharma said the mechanism of causation of diseases and methods for their corrective approaches is not possible without mastering veterinary anatomy adding that there is a positive co-relation between good animal health and productivity.
Later, the Minister released ‘Souvenir-cum-Technical Bulletin’ and ‘Indian Journal of Veterinary Anatomy’. He also conferred lifetime achievement awards on Dr. K. S. Roy and Prof. V. R. Bhomborkal. He also awarded fellowships to three eminent veterinary Anatomists of India.
