A win and not a triumph for team Anna in Hisar poll | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 17: Is defeat of the Congress candidate in the Jat dominated Hisar Lok Sabha constituency bypoll election in Haryana a victory for the team Anna? Is it a victory for Arvind Kejriwal who as a Hisarite campaigned in favour of Kuldeep Bishnoi, Haryana Janhit Congress-BJP candidate? Well if the poll results in 2009 are taken into account the victory of JHC-BJP candidate cannot be treated solely as a win for the team Anna. In 2009 Kuldeep Bishnoi's father, Bhajan Lal, who had remained Chief Minister of Haryana for more than twice, had won the seat by polling 2.48 lakhs against 2.41 lakhs votes polled by Sampat Singh. Jai Prakash had polled 2.04 lakh votes. This indicates that Bhajan Lal had firm roots in the constituency and his death in June last had not reduced him to oblivion. Hence his son Kuldeep Bishnoi got benefit of his father's blessings and that too when the BJP had been supporting him. If Kuldeep won the poll he won it by a margin of 6323 votes and his father had won it against the Congress candidate by a margin of 7,000 votes. Still those who treat the Hisar win for Bishnoi as victory for the team Anna are not wrong. When Arvind Kejriwal campaigned in the constituency against the Congress his success depended on the level of performance of the Congress candidate. In just declared results the Congress candidate, Jai Prakash, a three time MP, had finished at number three. The Congress should have shown a better performance because Sampat Singh, who had lost to Bhajan Lal in 2009 as Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate, had already joined the Congress. That Hisar Lok Sabha constituency presented the team Anna's first magic show is evident by the way a non-Jat candidate, Kuldeep Bishnoi, defeated INLD candidate, Ajay Chautala, grandson of Haryana's tallest political figure, Ch. Devi Lal. The constituency has over 12 lakh voters out of whom 4.75 lakh are Jat voters. This way team Anna's spell had transcended the caste barriers One may dispute with the team Anna's shift from anti-corruption crusade to poll politics but the real purpose of Kejriwal was to demonstrate the team Anna's strength for transforming poll fortune. There is one lesson for team Anna and one lesson for the Congress led UPA Government. The team Anna needs to concentrate on its crusade against corruption and demonstrate a semblance of flexibility by diluting its campaign against the Congress. It's campaign should be against the corrupt. And corrupt elements are not found only in the Congress but in other political parties too. The team Anna need to realise that a system that has been raped, debased and depraved cannot be overhauled and improved in a week or in a month or within a year. Hence team Anna has to demonstrate perseverance in order to achieve its goal of making India a corruption free nation. The Congress led UPA Government needs to avoid adopting a path of confrontation against Anna and his team. |
